    Access 2000 compacting

I have an interface. Make modifications, copy a form/report etc to test something out. Undo changes. Delete original form and rename the copy. Now everything is back as it was. The database BLOATS. Use the compact and repair option. Now the database is bigger than it was at the start of the whole procedure, even though it has not been changed in functionality.

I find after a number of compact/repair cycles that I can get a couple of MB back by creating a new database and importing everything from the old one. I suspect that there are still traces of changes left in the structure.

Does anyone know how to make Access really compact a database.

    Hi Andy,

I have noticed this as well. It doesn't appear Access 2000 does as good a job of compacting as Access 97 did/does.

What I have tried is the decompile command line option, which is undocumented- ("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficemsaccess.exe" "CatbaseFolderDatabase.mdb" /decompile) in the 'Target' of your desktop shortcut.

Then I compact twice. It seems to do the trick.

By the way, where in Switzerland do you live?

    Dave,

That's the only workaround I've found as well. In fact, in some extreme cases, I decompile and compact from the open database. The I close and reopen the database normally, recompile and compact again.

Whoops! That's the step I forgot to include:

    1. Decompile
    2. Recompile
    3. Compact Twice

    Thanks Charlotte.
