Quicktime in System Tray (XP Home)

I know that Apple thinks a lot of Quicktime and apparently Apple thinks I ought to love it too. I'm tired of looking at the logo in my System Tray and knowing that it is sucking up resources. But Apple does not give you a way to turn it off within the application and it's not in Start Up. I can see the little devil in Msconfig under the Startup tab -- qttask.exe. I've looked at some postings on Google that seem to indicate that as fast as you can uncheck it in msconfig, it comes back on the next reboot, and some even claim that you can kill it in the registry, but it comes back again (hard to believe). Rather than beat myself up, perhaps someone else on this list as already done the research and found the solution to qttask. What say you?

Re: Quicktime in System Tray (XP Home)

I'm sure I'm a little behind the times, since I haven't updated my Quicktime ever since..... I'm running Version 5.0.2 and I think I installed it earlier this year right after I switched to XP Pro. Anyway, I don't have anything in the tray or MSCONFIG for that matter. I wonder what our differences are - are you up to Version 6.x? I do have a copy of QTTASK.EXE in my Windows folder, with a date of Feb. 2002 but I can't for the life of me remember if I had to turn it off somehow or what I did (if anything) to keep it from running.

Start | Control Panel | QuickTime | "Browser Plug-in" from drop-down list | Uncheck "QuickTime system tray icon"

That particular "fix" doesn't seem to work if you happen across a site that wants to download "quicktime extras" - after you reboot, that annoying little POS is still there. I have no less than four entries in the disabled startup items group thanks to Apple's insistence on placing the useless icon there.

    My solution? I renamed QTTASK.EXE to QTTASK.EX_ and marked it read only. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> So far....so good.
