Combo with 160,000 recs. slow on wrong keystrokes (2000)

I have a combo box that's bound to an indexed field in a table with 160,000+ records. It works well if the user enters a correct value, but takes about 40 seconds to test each incorrect keystroke. Two questions: (1) Is there a way to quickly alert the user that their last keystroke created a value that is invalid? (2) If you type ahead 4 or 5 characters, you are in for a long wait -- is there a way to cancel the search that Access is conducting? Break and CTRL/Break don't work.

    Thanks for any help.

A combo box with a row source of 160,000+ records is not a very good idea - it uses a lot of resources. Take a look at the threads starting at <post#=137349>post 137349</post#> and <post#=55669>post 55669</post#> for ideas to get around this.

Thank you very much Hans. I was thinking about using a pre-filtered recordset but didn't know how viable that idea was. Now that I know that it's a proven solution for my situation I will proceed to work on it.
