Is this Normal Behavior? (Word 2000-2002)

In working with MS-Word, I noticed that if you open a saved document and, say you make something bold, then do an 'Undo' and close the document, you will not get a notice that the document is unsaved?

Does the 'Undo' make the saved flag change?

Even though the two version of the document are identical, no changes were actually made; the saved flag should be set to false when I do the action.

MS-Excel does not have that feature?!

On my machine running Windows XP Pro and Office XP, it will ask me if I want to save. Are you sure that it has NOT been saved after the change? Also do you have the "Auto Save" turned on?

If you undo everything you did, so that it is unchanged from when it was opened (or last saved), the Saved property will be set back to False. You don't like it that way?

I tried it on two different machines, running MS-Word 2000 and MS-Windows NT, and I had a saved document and I pressed the space bar and then I un-did that space bar and closed and NOTHING!!! No warning.

I suppose the undo does change the saved flag, but IMHO it should not.

You know also when I save a document and then right away I save it again, it does save...

No I think that the saved flag should only change when the document is altered, and that includes the "doing" and then the "undoing" of any alteration.

I know that the document is not changed, but I don't trust MS-Word to be that smart and know exactly what the human is thinking about.

The human is always fallible and thus the software should help the human be less fallible. At least this is MHO.

Well... if the document is identical to the one on disk, I'd rather not save it again and lose the information about the last time it was genuinely updated.

If you always want to save, you could override the FileClose command...

Your question asked about changing to bold and then undid the bold. Now you are adding a space and undoing the space. This is two different things, lets talk apple or oranges.

Which sample do you want to address?

What I meant in my posts is, no matter what action you take, adding a space, or making something bold, as soon as you undo this action Word will not ask you if you want to save this document.

I know that the document is still the same as the one saved, since the undo made it that way, but I feel it very odd that MS-Word will not ask you to save the document.

Its just my feeling, and I was surprised by it, its not a big deal in real life, I wished the developers of MS-Word talked to the developers of MS-Excel and kept everything constant among the Office applications.
