Strange Template locations (2000)

Can anybody tell me where my Office templates should be stored? At the moment I find the MS-supplied ones (like Contemporary Fax) in
C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates1033 (no idea what the 1033 means )
and the ones I've created are located in
C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates
under folders for the the various tabs I've created in the gallery. For instance Form_4.dot is in
C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftTemplatesForms
Also, normal.dot is located in C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftTemplates.

I'm rather confused here , because all templates appear in, and work from the File -> New gallery. I posted a (yet unanswered) post in the Word lounge regarding templates, one of my queries being how to get rid of the ".dot" in the gallery description of the custom templates. Maybe it's related to these bizarre file locations.

thanks for any info

1033 is the LCID that means English (US). If you search in the Lounge or Google or Microsoft.com you'll find a detailed MS article explaining how to add and delete the various templates and phantom tabs that appear in the File|New dialog. It involves going into the Add/Remove programs control panel and using the Office installer to customize Word's templates. The article gives more background on the whole sad situation.

OK, I finally found a (partial) answer to this on

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...B;en-us;q240216
... usually happens just after I post

This all makes sense, but doesn't help me get rid of that ".dot" extension in the gallery description of my own custom templates.
