    where's 'save'? (IE 6)

Greetings. I have just switched to IE6 and noticed that when I go to "FILE" the "Save" function is disabled, "whited" or "greyed" out. What gives. I remember with around 5.0 this was available. Has this feature been superceded by something else, like being able to view page offline. I don't remember using it in 5.5, so maybe it has been versions ago.

Anyone fill me in on this. I would like to save pages.

    Thanks. - bear

Not sure why "Save" is greyed out (mine doesn't show either), but you should be able to use "Save As," and then specify the folder where you want to save the web page.

Correct, as I have done in the past. But there is no "save as"!

By the way I am using Win98SE and have IE 6.0.2800.1106 installed and have utilized Windows Update. Other than what is recommended as settings for this site, in my recollection everything else is pretty much default.

    Strange phenonmenon! - bear

Wow, I just noticed that. Save is grayed out and Ctrl+S leads to an error beep.

However, I do have "Save As..."

I will look into this further.

Is this site specific? It may be possible to disable that item with code. Can you view source (either View|Source) or right-click|View Source...?

I you get really desperate, open the URL in Word. The page it makes is ugly, but at least you can save it.

    Re: where's 'save'? (IE 6)

I have asked around on several boards -- it seems that having "Save" grayed out is rather standard. No one seems to know why or when this changed. I have to assume that it was not designed this way originally...

But, everyone has the "Save As..." present and active. How can this be absent? I guess it is possible to have a registry 'tweak' to remove "Save As..." -- duh, and I just found it.

    Look in the Registry under:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerRestrictions]

...and see if there is an entry called "NoBrowserSaveAs". Might be the ticket.

Thanks all - thats the answer

I changed that registry value from 1 to 0 and I get "save as"! Thank you very all very much for your attention.

Good forum, and a nice place to concentrate on, thanks again.

By the way I figure "save" was there from the IE 5.5 that was upgraded to 6 and possibly with expansion of "view as a web page off line" they felt it shouldnt be there. Save probably might be gone in the future.

I have "Save" on my file menu on a clean IE6 installation, albeit greyed out.

I was intrigued enough by all this to trawl through IE Help and eventually came upon this under "Access FTP sites directly":

Some programs may support opening and
saving files from FTP servers by typing an FTP
address in the File Open or File Save dialog box.

    So there just may be a use for it sometime. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Intriguing. That inspired me to go to an FTP site and look around -- and the Save menu item was GONE!!

I heard what I feel is a really good answer: The "Save" is there for Windows Explorer. Since IE is just a modified version of Windows Explorer, the Save is just some residual item that they did not get rid of.

They may not be true, but it is also an interesting view!

I have 5.5 & Save is greyed out. Don't recall ever using it.
