    Column breaks (Word 2K)

A column break is part of a paragraph which appears in two columns, the column where the break is introduced and the new column,;to the user it will look like the first paragraph of the new column is indepent to the last line of the previous column. Usually this doesn't matter ; however, if you want to create a column heading style with, for example, shading it proves problematic as the shading appears on the last line of the previous column and probably not what is wanted. The only way round this that I've found is to have a "column break" style.

Has anyone found a better way?

p.s. You have to watch for heading aligment anyway with columns where you use before & after spacing so if you have a dummy column break syle you must make allowances for the space taken up by this when checking veritcal alignment of the hedaings

    Re: Column breaks (Word 2K)

Word had this problem for page breaks as well and fudged it with the 'Format Paragraph > Page break before' setting.
    I suspect that your workaround is as good as it gets. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
All I can possibly add is that it is sometimes useful to set the font size to "1" for such special paragraphs to minimize their effect on layouts.
(I find that trick enormously useful after tables where the 'required' extra paragraph mark so often causes an unnecesary page break.)

    Re: Column breaks (Word 2K)

    Andrew,

Thanks for the reply. I agree about the 1 point font, although I sometimes want a single spaced paragraph to maintain overall design look {Start RANT - like after single spaced bullets, when are MS going to give us a condition for "if last paragraph in this style" then , at least in the case of single spaced lists we could specify double spaced on last one - End RANT}, I also use keep with next so everything moves as a block otherwise I find myself endlessly having to check the whole document to ensure pagination is sensible.

I have appreciated your other lounge contributions so many thanks
