    Owner files (Word 2002 (sp2))

On two networks I support with recent installations of Office XP(SP2), Win 2000 servers, Win XP Pro on the workstations - a LOT of owner files (~$filename.doc) are being left open on a regular basis. Dozens of them every day. Is anyone else seeing this? Any suggestions?

    Darryl,

Usually any file starting with a tilde symbol (~) is an office temporary file or backup file, they are used for recovery purposes. These files live, in the case of Word, in the directory the user specifies using Tools, Options, File Locations, AutoRecovery Files; I think Powerpoint uses the same location and possibly Excel. My understanding is that these files are only left lying about if the application crashes... is this happening?

    Liz

(By default the location is blank which means they will default to, and clutter up, the Word directory in Program Files so its a good idea to specify somewhere else, I have a recovery folder in my User area and I have a scheduled job to clen it up regularly)

The files to which I am referring (~$filename.doc) are the specific temporary files called owner files and they are always created in the folder of the original document. This is what let's you get the message that "file is in use by username". If the message is "the file is in use by another user", this suggests the owner file is corrupted. Like other temporary files, these should go away automatically ... but they are not. This is my problem.

This article is a very good discussion of the various temp files, how/why they are used and where they reside.

Re: Owner files (Word 2002 (sp2))

This has happened to us with W97 and W2k.

The problem for use was the permissions on the network directory.

The folks that opened do NOT have delete permissions on the directories.

They could create, edit but not delete, so when the closed the doc, the temp file was not being deleted, because they didn't have sufficient rights.
