    Drop-down menus in Outlook (98)

    Hi there,

Can anyone throw light on why the drop-down menus in my Outlook 98 installation have suddenly started to slow down? They used to appear instantaneously whenever I clicked on the appropriate command (e.g. Tools, File etc.) but now they unroll downwards rather like a venetian blind that is sticking slightly! The program is still usable, so this is not a desperate cry for help, but I would certainly like to know what the cause might be, and a cure if one is available. I am still using Windows 95 as my OS, if that might be a factor.

Is it only within Outlook that you are having slow menus?

    Leif,

No, it also happens in Word, Excel and Powerpoint, but not in IE5.5. It does not seem to affect non-Microsoft software. Even more peculiar is that the menus appear at the normal speed if I use the keyboard shortcuts, it is only if I use the mouse and click on the menu command that this happens.

Did someone install new fonts, or a new printer driver? You could try turning off display of fonts in their font. I don't know where you do this in OL98. In OL2K you right click on the tool bar, choose customize, click the options tab and uncheck the box.

This doesn't address the cause, but it might fix the symptom.

I have remembered that the problem started shortly after an attempt to install a Microsoft Java VM patch yesterday. As the problem seems only to affect Microsoft products, maybe there is a link there somewhere??!!

If it is only affecting your mouse, it may be worth running through the settings there from your CP.

(As this appears to be more MS General than specifically Outlook, I'm going to move the whole thread for a wider audience...)

There is a settings in the Display control panel, not specific to Office (see attachment). There probably also is an Office-specific setting somewhere.
