    History disappears (6.0 SP1)

Every couple of weeks all of my link history disappears, and none of the links that I have visited are highlighted. This is frustrating since there are several sights that I am trying to read through, and I depend on the history to show me what I have already read. All of a sudden, all of the history disappears, including what I visited the last time I was online. I can understand IE cleaning out very old links occasionally, but why is what I visited on my pervious session getting deleted?

Hmmm... I don't believe that is the expected behavior. You are supposed to be able to set the length of time the History is stored under Tools | Internet Options. There are even programs out there to help you get rid of your History more effectively (e.g., History Kills). So why is yours disappearing spontaneously??

Does you History folder itself get cleared, or just the "visited" link behavior? I wonder if this is due to the TIF being emptied? Perhaps Windows is designed to dump the entire contents once it gets full -- instead of simply using 'first-in, first-out' cleaing methods?

What are your "History" settings in "Tools, Internet Options" and on the General tab?

    Re: History disappears (6.0 SP1)

The length of time to keep the History was set to 150 days (much longer than the couple of weeks between getting cleared). I have now changed that to 999 days to see if that makes any difference.

I don't think that the TIF folder is getting completely cleared since it currently contains many files, and I am not losing the Lounge cookie file. The only thing that seems to get cleared is the link history.

It was set to keep history for 150 days, which is much longer than what is happening. I have changed it to 999 days to see if that makes any difference, but I would not expect it to.

    Re: History disappears (6.0 SP1)

The cookies is really not in the TIF anyways, so the Cookies are never cleared when the TIF gets dumped.

Again, is the History folder itself "cleaned" or just the "visited" behavior. If the History folder is NOT cleared, then setting your History to 99999999 days is STILL not going to make a difference.

I wonder if the "visited" link behavior is controlled via the TIF and not the History folder -- I don't know, but it is plausible. Alternatively, the "visited" link behavior could be set to time out after a predetermined interval. I need to look into this further....

You have NOT stated what OS you are using. I do NOT use the "History" listing within IE, but I do know that there are several settings there for viewing the list.

But what is shown (listed) in the History folder? If the sites are NOT listed in this folder then the link wil not appear to be "Visited".

There are third party SW that have settings to clear the history, including TweakUI. Do you have any of these that the setting may have been set in.

I know what it is, you did NOT activate your updated copy of IE <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Nope. It is not the TIF. I cleared the TIF manually and the 'visited' link remained a different color. Where is this stored?

The registry is the 'usual' source of persistent data. There are changes in there after visiting a web page -- but they are in one of those bizarre sections of the registry:

    HKEY_USERS.DEFAULTSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionExplorerUserAssist{hex number}CountHRZR_HVGBBYONE

Could that be the storage place of the 'visited' links??
    _______________

Nope. Everyone tells me this is the History folder's job. So, why is your History folder deleting it's contents inappropriately?

Is it our old friend index.dat?

    Re: History disappears (6.0 SP1)

    Well the answer is an uncontestable YES -- but that doesn't answer WHY. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    _________________________________________

The History folder is made up one sub-folder "History.IE5". Underneath this are various subfolders that are named by date. The format is:

    MSHist01 YYYYMMDD YYYYMMDD

The folders each span a 24 hour period. For example, the folder for some period covering part of yesterday and today would be named "MSHist012002121620021217".

To find a list of your History Sub-folders, open your registry and examine this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionInternet Settings5.0CacheExtensible Cache. Pay special attention to the "CachePath" entry and you will see that what I am saying is correct.
    __________________________________________________ ___

The ONLY contents of any of these sub-folders are index.dat files. Therefore, for your "History" to be cleared, by definition the index.dat files must be purged. Now, there is ONE index.dat file in the main History.IE5 folder itself -- this is in addition to the index.dat file in each of the dated sub-folders.

This main index.dat file is modified on-the-fly as you search the web. I suspect that when the 24 clock has ticked by, this index.dat is then shoved into a new 'dated' subfolder -- and a sparkling clean index.dat file is created under History.IE5.

Alternatively, this main index.dat file could hold new information PLUS all the old information -- it is difficult to tell on my computer because I keep the index.dat too clean. I will have to investigate this elsewhere. I can state that IE creates the folder for "today and tomorrow" before tomorrow. This make me wonder if the main index.dat is "all conslusive" or not... Don't know.

    ________________________________

What does it look like inside those mysterious index.dat files?? Here is an example:

    Client UrlCache MMF Ver 5.2

    Visited: UserName@http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q196/4/80.asp
    Visited: UserName@http://www.digerat.com/win98_optimization.htm
    Visited: etc., etc.

...with some intervening goop. Clearly, this seems to be related to the "visited" link behavior...
    _____________________________________

So... that is how the History folder works. BUT... we still don't know WHY or HOW the History folder's index.dat files are being purged.

    Re: History disappears (6.0 SP1)

Ahhh... there is one possibility -- we go back to the concept of a limited size cache. If you check out this registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionInternet Settings5.0CacheHistory

You will note there is a "CacheLimit" value. Mine is set at 0x2000 (8192). [b]Is Legare simply exceeding his CacheLimit??

He could be running a scheduled automatic cleanup program which is just doing what it is told.

    Re: History disappears (6.0 SP1)

If he does not have some automated "History index.dat cleaning program", then I have to wonder if he is just exceeding the History Cache size. The solution, therefore, may be to increase the size of the History Cache...

This is a VERY difficult area to investigate -- not much solid information. BUT... I did find this interesting quote:

"Furthermore, cache files are deleted somewhat randomly instead of in order by oldest first (sort of killing the concept of a cache)."

Now, this is talking about the index.dat in the TIF for IE4 -- but I suspect the same concept may hold....

    The OS is Win 2K.

I am now traveling for a week, and can't look at what is in the "history folder" since that system is back home.

I don't have any third party software, including Tweak UI that would be doing anything with the history folder.

No, I do not have any scheduled cleanup programs. I don't have any scheduled tasks at all.
