Can I delete this folder

This morning I had the pleasure of seeing most of my system being removed on booting up and loading Win 98.
I presume I had acquired a virus or trojan despite my virus checker (AVG) with most recent updates not detecting it.
I have since installed ME. Using Aladdin Stuffit Browser shows a folder named _RESTORE which is not visible with Windows explorer.
Is it safe for me to delete this folder which contains a huge number of files?

Cheers

Rob

Re: Can I delete this folder

I'm not going to tell you what I think of Windows ME (I'll let others do that ) but that folder isfor the System Restore function. You can't delete it even if you want to, because it's open for exclusive use by Windows. You'd need to disable System Restore first. Frankly - that's one of the only good things about ME, so disabling it is akin to shooting yourself in the foot. You're taking away a good safety net. I would, however, reduce the amount of disk space that System Restore is allowed to use, because by default it's 10% - and that's a lotta space on a big disk.

Thanks for the rapid response. I take it as read that I've made perhaps a bad move.
I'd be grateful if you could run through the procedure to reduce the amount of disk space it uses. What would be a workable value?

Cheers

Re: Can I delete this folder

The link in Leif's post above to article 267951 has detailed instructions on changing the space used. As far as a workable figure....that's whatever you are comfortable with. I usually reserve around 3% space under Windows XP, and I don't have any hard drive partitions larger than 25GB, in fact most are much smaller than that.

I didn't mean to imply that you've made a bad move, it's just that my personal experience with Windows ME, which is echoed by a large number of users, is that it's a half baked product that should never have escaped from Microsoft's halls. Your experience could be a lot different, but the odds are that you will have weird issues with it now and again....so keep the Lounge link handy, just in case.

Hi Rob

Don't let those guys snow you about ME......they're just regretting their choices of OS's.

At my office in the city, we use 11 computers running NT4, '98, 2000, XP, only recently ditching '95, on a LAN......lot's of problems with all of them!!
At home, we use 2 ME computers on a LAN (P2P).....very few problems......and I tend to make a habit of searching out new, free software to download, install and try....not the safest thing to be doing!!

Have a Great day!!!

Re: Can I delete this folder

Only problems that I've had with my WinME is my own dumb moves or else something that an update from Microsoft caused.
I love my WinME and won't upgrade unless some SugarDaddy buys me a brand-new computer system (with all the bells&whistles and XP is the only available OS), I am sticking and protecting my WinME!

I think you will find out that Me will work just fine as long as you do NOT attempt to tweak it. See "Lonnies" post below. It was produced for those who needed a Plug nad Play computer. If you are a power user of any accord and do not like how MS has done things, I would step back to Win 98 or on up to XP Home or Pro.
Nuf said, you have been warned about tweaking it

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Can I delete this folder

Strangley, that was my own limited experience with ME too. But I also never really used it, being an NT guy from way back. The real gripes I heard about, and saw, came from family members - Mom and Dad, my sister - all of them decidedly non-tweaking folk. The majority opinion seems to be that ME isn't all that great, but it's by no means the be-all end-all, and certainly there are those who have gotten many miles of trouble free use out of it.

they're just regretting their choices of OS's

I have never regretted staying away from the Win 9x platform.

ME was fine, as long as you liked to do the three finger salute. Move up to XP if you can swing it.

I am intrigued, though reluctant to display my ignorance, What is a three-fingered salute?

Hi Rob

What is a three-fingered salute?

Hi Rob,
I thought everyone knew the term, (see KenK post above) It's a much nicer one than the One finger salute that most people in the States know.
Now don't tell me you don't know the 1 finger salute?
