    Office Viewers (XP SP-1)

Need help regarding problem with Office 97/2000 viewers. On the MS download site it shows the viewers as compatible with 95/98/NT. I know we shouldn't but we did anyway. We tried using it on a Windows 2000 machine. When in use, the CPU usage showing on the Task Pane maxes out at 100%. Also, when using on an NT box it had incompatibilities opening Word documents created and saved on Office XP such as different fonts or text color. Does anyone know of a workaround so we can use the viewers on a W2K box? Will MS come up with a W2K or Office XP version of the viewers? (I doubt it though since I think MS dropped support for the viewers). Any feedback will be appreciated.

If you want to see the contents of Word documents, you can use WordPad that comes with Windows, however, it does not show you formatting and embedded pictures.

The "workaround" we use to show the document to non-Office users is converting it into PDF file with Adobe Acrobat. Or... just print and send a hard copy.

Thanks for the suggestions. We did look at those options. One was converting the file into either PDF or HTML. We actually were leaning more on HTML since not all our machines have acrobat reader. With HTML, we will not have to install anything since IE is included in all our machines. This didn't fly because of the volume of files that would need to be converted. We also tried WordPad but that didn't satisfy our user's requirements either. At this time, it looks like we might have to go with some third party software that essentially does what the office viewers does. We really are not too enthused about this because this would entail some cost for us. As you know the Office viewers are free. It's just too bad that MS will not provide any kind of support anymore for it. In a sense I understand that it doesn't make them any money. In fact, it eats up on their revenue because in some cases, the viewers are sufficient (such as our case). This means users doesn't have to purchase a full license for Office.
