Re: Print Problem - bottom 3rd not printing (WORD 97/2000)

Can you post a document that suffers from this problem? There doesn't need to be a lot of text in the document, just enough lines with dummy text to demonstrate what you describe.

Tip: you can create dummy text by typing =rand() and pressing Enter. This will create three paragraphs, each consisting of five copies of the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." To get m paragraphs, each with n copies of this sentence, type =rand(m, n) followed by Enter. See <A target="_blank" HREF="http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/DummyText.htm">The rand

What printer and printer drivers are you using? What Operating System are you running?

We've had similar issues before which related related to the printer drivers that were using for HPLaserjets 4000s and 8000s on Windows 2000 machines. If you're using HP laserjets, you may want to check to see if you can download newer drivers from HP's web site. In our case, using the drivers that shipped with Microsoft Windows 2000 also worked.

(Not sure what Jonathan West posting you're referencing. Perhaps you could provide a link or a description of how to get to it?)

Actually, Yes this has been address before. If your on a network, w/ a Win2K machine on a Win2k server you cannot download new drivers because the drivers actually reside out on the server. It's a PS / PCL conflict.
You actually have to set the printer for the document before you start building it. And it has to be a PCL printer. If you don't set the printer or use a PS printer you will lose the bottom 2" or so of your document. And if you try to force the margins you get the nasty message, and it still does the same thing.

Kris--you're absolutely correct that if your printing environment is handled on the server side, the user can't simply download an updated printer driver for his/her machine. optimally, in those situations, the network people will be able and willing to update the driver as necessary (or, if they can't/won't, you could try to add a local TCP/IP printer if your workstation isn't locked down too severely).

<You actually have to set the printer for the document before you start building it.>
i am a bit puzzled by this statement. in my experience, simply switching drivers has corrected the problem on every document that we've seen these difficulties. i can't think of a reason why the default printer would embed any information in a document that would render it unusable if the printer driver changes later (notwithstanding margin issues if the 'new' printer has more restrictive margin capabilities than the 'original').

Only problem is that 2k server will only support one printer/driver per physical device. And updating the driver doesn't work because it is a format problem between PS and PCL.
< i can't think of a reason why the default printer would embed any information in a document that would render it unusable if the printer driver changes later (notwithstanding margin issues if the 'new' printer has more restrictive margin capabilities than the 'original').>
You wouldn't think so but, there are "formats" (I can't think of the proper term, right now <img src=/S/igiveup.gif border=0 alt=igiveup width=31 height=23> ) that get used depending on the printer and printer driver. If you try to sett up a document to print Landscape Ledger, you cannot set the paper size to ledger unless you are pointing at a printer that can handle ledger size.
    I've attributed to a M$ thing <img src=/S/scream.gif border=0 alt=scream width=15 height=15> and have a work-around for my situation that involves using a spare Win98/Off2k system.
(one of the priviledges of being in the IT dept <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15> , is having spare boxes around.)
And this works because the printer driver resides on the local box for Win98, I also have the same printer set up as both a PCL and PS printer.

Print Problem - bottom 3rd not printing (WORD 97/2000)

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 20-Dec-02 16:05. Added clarifying [bracketed insertion] (and URL tags).)</P>------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Update: 20/12/02

Sorry, unable to attach a document as our company does not allow UPLOAD of it. I have requested them to sort this out but may take a while. I have also got tech guys to update the printer drivers for my & other printers (HP Lasertjet for most users). I shall try again once they have upgraded the drivers.

I am using Lasertjet 450n and Windows NT operating system. This problem manifests itself on PRINT PREVIEW (bottom 3rd not shown) as well, not just when printing. Only thing is that the problem is INTERMITTENT. It works sometime and other times does not so...

Anyway, attached is a simple document with 7 pages as described below in my previous message.

The solution [that does not work for me] is on the Microsoft MVQ Site here: Paragraph borders lost when printing from a VBA macro
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have template where the user is able to add a mixture of landscaped and portrait pages. The template & document based on it is formatted as follow:

1st Section: Two pages - document information and change history, i.e. fixed pages - user cannot change anything.
2nd Section: default 1 page for TOC but extendable if TOC goes beyod 1 pages - end with section break starting at ODD page
3rd Section: User changeable part of the document. Portrait.

    The action:
On page 5 - insert some text, insert a landscaped section (a macro called to insert section, set page options, headers/footer etc for landscaped page). Go to the landscaped section (Page 6).
Insert a Portrait section (thru a macro).

    So we have:
    Portrait
Portrait - End of Page = New Section next page
Portrait - End of Page = New Section ODD page
Portrait - End of Page = New Section next page
Landscape - End of Page = New Section next page
    Portrait

Then Print the document: Again a macro called (which updates TOC and calls the ActiveDocument.Printout function.

The problem: On most occasions it prints the document but does not print the last 3rd of the (some) portrait pages. Sometimes it print everything OK. Even print preview sometimes does not show the bottom 3rd of a portrait page but corrects itself if you page up/down few times. I haved tried the solution suggested by Jonathan West on the Microsoft Word MVQ site but this does not seem to work.

Any ideas or has anyone seen this kind of thing before. Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

    Robie
    Thanks.
