Windows Update

Im running XP Pro SP1

I just recently re-installed windows last week after some other issues forced it (most notably user error )

on that re-install, as soon as I had Windows installed, I applied the SP1 patch and then went to Office XP Pro to install it. the installshield wizaard progress bar moved about halfway across, and then stopped and hung there. I read a KB article about it that said the SYSTEM group did not have sufficient access/permissions to create/modify the install folder in %windir%. I checked it, and it had full control, so that didnt apply. Anyway, the next morning I tried it again. I ran setup, clicked through and then went and made breakfast, got a paper and started reading it at my desk. about 10 mins later, all of a sudden I heard the CD spin up and it continued installing windows. I then went through the same process (incl 10 min wait) for Front Page, and then every other application I installed that used the installshield.

SO I blew it off and re-installed windows a second time, this time not applying the SP1 patch til AFTER I loaded Office. THEN I put on SP1 and then went back and installed FP, to see if I got the same reaction. I didnt, everything worked and installed ok, and the system was stable... until this morning! I went to windowsupdate and tried to download a patch (or 10 as it were) and when I clicked on Install Now, the EULA popped up and then disapeared before I could click anything (or for that matter even see anything) and all the text on windows update turned red and said I had to click accept in order to install the patch. I tried a fresh, clean cold-boot and did it again, and still no joy. Has anyone else seen this behaviour from Windows Update before?

Re: Windows Update

Im an idiot.

I had the sound turned off, so I didnt hear the "POP!" of my pop-up blocker killing the EULA screen. This time I just happened to see the icon in the systray light up when it blocked it. I turned it off and clicked install now again and it worked fine. I guess on my old install of windows I had configured windows update to "allow" pop-ups or something.

Something I wanted to add that a great many people miss....Windows Update has a nice troubleshooter right there on the site. On the left hand side, look for Get help and support which will take you to this url: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ with a list of common issues and fixes.

Re: Windows Update

I think you learned a great lesson.
One needs to install ALL major programs before any of the toys (tools) that one may need.

When I build or rebuild a machine, I install the OS, my AV product and updates, then the OS updates. Then MS Office, and updates, now it is time to set my email and other programs and the my restore my data backups.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
