'Save' doesn't save to original location (Excel 97)

It seems that when I open a document from one of our many corporate LANs. Then edit and go to "SAVE", it should save back to the same place I retrieved it from. However, it always wants to save back into my default folder. Thoughts ? This is my first post on this board. Hope I did it right. Thanks.

    You did OK, post shows up and all <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> !
    Welcome to the lounge.

    To your problem:

    This is not normal behaviour.
The workbook you open, is that a normal XL file or is it a template (you should see a number appearing behind the filename, e.g. Test1.xls or test2.xls)? Does it contain macro's? Do you have read/write access to the location in question?
What does caption of the dialog say which appears if you choose save? If it is Save-As, someone (Corporate IT?) may also have changed the working of your menu...
What happens if you press control-s (shortcut to save)?

    Many questions, little answers <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
