Opening email attachments

Is there a way to force all email attachments to open a dialog box with option to open or save when double clicking the attachment without going in to Explorer and changing the file type option for every file type?

I'm probably missing the point here, but right clicking on any mail attachment produces a short cut menu with Open and Save as options.
Doesn't this do what you want?

You lost me here ... why are you changing the file type options at all, and why through Explorer? (No sarcasm or offense intended.) I often change the file name to something more meaningful to me, but that change can be made during the save dialog. I don't mess with the file type because that messes up access to the saved file.

BTW, casaveatt may be of interest.

Allow me to clarify: I support numerous naieve users. I want to force the dialog box to open when they double click on any file attachment. It gives an option to see the full file name including file extension before blindly opening it. You can force this to happen by checking the option CONFIRM OPEN AFTER DOWNLOADING on the file types dialog in Windows Explorer. Obviously, I would like this to be the universal default rather than set every file type on every users machine. I thought I saw something to this effect in a WOW a while back but I couldn't find it in an archive search.

Your dialog idea is a good one; but I don't think the native capability exists in OL.

If your focus is the security issue pertaining to opening unknown documents, there are solutions such as CaSaveAtt.

Re: Opening email attachments

I use OL2000 original, not SR-1, and have set Attachment Security... to "High" on the Security tab of the Options... dialog. When I double-click an Office document (e.g., .DOC, .XLS), I get a message asking whether I want to open or save it, and a checkbox that allows me to disable this message in the future. When I double-click an HTML or .REG, I get the dialog but no option to remove the file from the list.

Is this enough, or do you want to disable the checkbox for all attachments? (I don't have an answer as to how to do that, but one possibility to explore is the Office Resource Kit, which allows you to establish server-based policies for various Office settings.)

the necessary key is in the ORK - it's on the office web site. http://www.officeupdate.com

FYI: officeupdate was recently closed by MS and was replaced with http://office.microsoft.com

the 2000 RK is at http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/ but i don't see any links to it from the new office site.
the xp resource kit accessed by changing 2000 to xp in the url above.

also note that the office update site no longer has content for office 95.

The settings in Windows Explorer apply to OL 2000. In the advanced area of each file type check the box "Ask before opening".
This needs to be do to every file type taht you weant this to happen.
This has been working since Winosw 98 Fe and OL 97.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
