Outlook takes 70 seconds to open (Version OE 6)

    Hi
    OS Windows XP Pro

This is a niggardly one, more than a problem, just lately OE6 takes about 70 seconds to open where it used to take about 4seconds.
I have not loaded any new software except for running windows update which I do on a regular basis.
I removed all my blocked senders and mail rules to no avail. Incedently this applies to Outlook aswell.

Sometimes a slow open is due to a missing or corrupted file, imagehlp.dll, which belongs in the windowssystem folder. Although it usually results from installing other programs (Mcafee is a known cause) and even though you indicate you haven't added any software, it might be worth trying.

Go to start menu, select run
    Type "sfc" (no quotation marks)
Select "extract one file from installation disk"
    Specify "imagehlp.dll"
    Restore to C:windowssystem

    Hi

Thanks for your reply I am running Windows XP Pro and I cannot run sfc without a parameter such as /scannow /scanonce etc so I cannot extract a file in this way.

I also did a search for imagehlp.dll and could find nothing. NB I have show all files set so it is not hidden to me.

Is there another way to extract this file.

The instructions were for Win 98. I'm not sure, though, why XP should be different. In any case, I did a Google search and found a number of sources that have imagehlp.dll: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navc...t&q="dll+files" . Hope that helps.

Just found another possibility. Microsoft KB has an article relating to OE 5 in Win ME or 98 that discusses a fix for a slow start up. Besides the imagehlp.dll problem, incorrect Pstore files are another one. Even though you have OE 6 and XP Pro, you might want to check it out. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;235300. Another KB article (268113) mentions McAfee 4.02 or 4.03 as the cause of the imagehlp.dll problem.

    Hi Dengar

I have tried everything you suggested, including expand instead of extract. But nothing worked I even re-installed explorer and Outlook express to no avail.

As is usual with Microdaft it probably means a clean install.

    Thanks for your help anyway

close OE, rename inbox, outbox, sent and deleted folders. Reopen OE. To recover the inbox and sent items, see http://www.tomsterdam.com for DBXtract.
