Import from CSV or XLS (XP SP2)

Today, we tried to import a file that had been converted from a Psion to CSV Format (which we've successfully done in the past). However, no matter what way we tried to do this, Outlook just gave Error Messages.

The things I tried were . . .

Import from CSV
Import from XLS
Copy data from CSV into Notepad to rip-out any underlying code, then pasted back into Excel
Pasted data into a new workbook and saved as CSV
Pasted raw data into a new workbook and saved as XLS
Pasted raw date into a new workbook and saved as Excel Version 4
Pasted into WordPerfect, got WP to save it as an Excel file; opened the file in Excel, saved as XP Version

I spent hours trying to do this, but Outlook simply won't do it, yet I know I'm not asking the impossible.

Does anyone know if SP1 or SP2 broke this feature or has caused bugs with this feature?

One of the Error Messages was "A File error has occurred in the Comma Separated Values (Windows) translator while initializing a translator to build the field map.
The File " . . . " was not recognized. The Comma Separated Values (Windows Translator was unable to recognize this file. It could be the wrong file, a version of the file type which is not supported by this translator, or the file might be corrupt".

I tried this on 2 PCs: 1 with XP SP1 and 1 with XP SP2. As it worked on neither, and as I copied and pasted the data into brand-new files, I presume that there was no problem with the file being corrupt.

I *DID* create a brand-new file with 2 Columns and 1 Row:
Name E-Mail Address
Data Data

. . . and this file imported OK.

I'm stumped, confused, and confounded.

Can anyone provide any ideas as to why this is happening and how this can be circumvented?
Could it be the Field *TYPE* in Excel, e.g., General, Text, etc?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Merry Christmas.

Brian

Sp2 imports CSV's fine on my system.
You seem to have tried all the obvious tests for file and data content already but that is where my suspicions lie.

The only additional things I can think of is
- scanning for any imbedded non-printable characters
- splitting the import file into two halves and seeing if either half imports - if it does, split the 'bad' half & try again ...
- if the data is not confidential you could either post it, or e-mail it direct and I'll have a look. <to make data confidential just find/replace most letters of the alphabet with 'x'>
