    Deleting Files (XP Pro SP1)

When deleting files or shorcuts it allways seems to take a long time. Deleting a shortcut takes about 3 seconds. Are there any setting in WinXP that I could be looking for?

Is your machine on a network, or did it used to be on a network? There are other threads here in The Lounge that talk about the subject of "slowness" that can be caused by your machine having to "check out" network resources every time you do something. Open Folder Options, either in Windows Explorer or Control Panel and click on View. Take out the checkmark on "Automatically search for network folders and printers." If that doesn't help, let me know. The next piece of this involves editing the registry, if you're up to it.....

Thanks Al - it was checked. No - the machine has allways been standalone. I'm game for playing with the registry - Would like to back it up first, if you can include steps to do this I would be grateful

If the machine has always been standalone, there's no need for you to do the registry thing. On a couple of recent occasions, a search of the registry for " " (network UNC path indicator) helped clear up machine slowdowns. I dunno - let me think about what else to look for whilst we see if another Lounger has a suggestion.

Is this a shortcut to a local file?
Are you running the Indexing service?

Open up Task manager and select Processes.
Sort on CPU to show what's hogging the processor, then delete a shortcut.....

And, in addition to what Leif suggested, I didn't ask you this at the outset, Simon, but are you running any antivirus software and is it up to date; recent system scan, just to make sure you haven't picked up a nasty? How about ad-checking software, like AdAware - you ought to have something installed, there's too much crud out there in 'Net Land. And lastly, take a look in MSCONFIG after you do the processes thing Leif suggested. See if you can spot any "hogs" being loaded at STARTUP. Make a screenshot for us if appropriate.

Re: Deleting Files (XP Pro SP1)

    Gents,

Confirm I am only deleting shortcuts.

The indexing service was on for "C:/docs and settings" & "C:/" (I have now set them to "no" for include in catalogue - is this correct??) What is the indexing service and what does it do?

I rebooted and tried more deletions from IE - While looking at the CPU process the first shortcut took 14.5 secs to be deleted accompanied with HDD activity - the second and subsequent deletions went in a flash

The high hitters are system idle process & Tesco.net (my ISP) nothing changes during deletion.

I am using Norton Antivirus and live update - definitions and system scan up to date.

AdAware not used - would you recommend it?

I took a look at startup in MSconfig - do not understand what some programmes are - there are 3 lines that do not have a startup name - How do I include a screen print in a reply?

Thanks for your input so far

    Simon

Put the screen print into Word then save that then zip and include the file as an attachment.

Indexing Service: Help describes it as: "You can use Indexing Service to index documents and document properties on your disks and store the information in a catalog. You can also use Indexing Service to search for documents, either through Search on the Start menu or through a Web browser."
Whether or not it is of any great advantage, I can not personally say. Unless you are doing a lot of searching, I would suspect it is just another resource hog.

High hitters: System idle is good - it literally means nothing is happening. But why is Tesco.net active? Are you connected to the internet at the time?

Norton AntiVirus: Is it set to monitor all file activity?

AdAware: I would certainly recommend AdAware - but it would not affect performance as - as far as I am aware - it is only active when you run it.

Screenshots: Check this post from Lounge Matters.

Startup Prorgrams: Check out pacs-portal for a list of programs and what use they may be. (It is often quicker to run a search on the page to find a particular entry (with IE - Edit > Find on this page...) as they are not always listed the way you would expect.)

Other thoughts - have you run a full ChkDsk and Defrag recently? Is your recycle bin full?

Re: Deleting Files (XP Pro SP1)

Indexing Service: - Probably best to leave it set to "no" then

High hitters: Yes - connected to Tesco.Net - however problem is apparent when not connected

Norton AntiVirus: Is it set to monitor all file activity? - Presumably yes - cant see anything to suggest otherwise

AdAware: Downloaded and installed - thanks

    Screenshots: Thanks

Startup Prorgrams: Check out pacs-portal - will do

Other thoughts - have you run a full ChkDsk and Defrag recently? - Yes

Is your recycle bin full? - yes - have emptied it now - took over 3 mins to do but seems to have done the trick

Thanks for all the pointers - will report back any problems

    Simon
