Monitor

The monitor screen goes dark all by itself. My settings in Power Mgmt. are: Power Schemes: Always On System Standby: Never Turn off monitor: Never.
Turn off hrd disks: Never

At first I thought the problem might be because of my choices in Power Mgmt, but when I checked they were as mentioned above. I could not regain the monitor screen until I had shut the CPU off. This is an intermittant occurrence, about once a month or less.

I'm on a LAN Network and shut down when I fell I need too or feel that I should.

Please help me with this mysterious problem.

(Edited by Leif on 22-Dec-02 00:09. )
So, once a month your screen goes completely blank, and the only way you can recover is to switch off and on again?
Does it happen as you are using your pc, or after it has been left alone for a while?

Edited to add: I was thinking XP - you may not have this option..

Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Settings >
Check the System failure setting and check the option to write an even to the system log is enabled.
Next time it happens, see if anything is listed in the log.

Re: Monitor

I'm wondering if your system's BIOS is shutting down the monitor? When the computer starts, you will see text (usually) that says Press F1 to enter setup or similar. Even if you've never wandered into the BIOS settings before, it's not hard to locate it - look for power management and make sure that it's set to User Defined. Anything else could be sending the signal to shut the monitor down. And....don't forget to try Leif's suggestion first.

Re: Monitor

It only happens when I'm away for awhile. As for right clicking My Computer, I don't see Settings. I see four tabs reading from left to right:

General > Device Manger > Hardware Profiles > Performance. I'm running Windows 98 SE. Am I in the wrong place?

Nope - I was, I'm afraid! Give Mark's instructions a shot.

Otherwise:
Is it time related? - i.e. after so many hours use, or so many hours of being switched on, or so many hours of inactivity?
Does your keyboard freeze as well? - hit the NumLock key and see if the indicator toggles off and on.

Re: Monitor

I waited a few days to see if it happened again and how frequently.

I think I've discovered what may be the cause. When my desk chair banged a metal cabinet behind me, the monitor went dark again.. I will check my connections, something may have loosened. Anyway, I no longer think that the problem is with the monitor itself. When I find out for certain, I'll return and let you know.

Can't be upset with this piece of metal, when the holidys are so much more important.
