    Which Internet Explorer (I.E. ?????)

Does anyone know the latest version of I.E. that is compatible with Windows 95? If so, do you know where I can download it to a CD to install on an old machine which is not connected to the Internet?

    Thanks.

It's deja vu all over again! See this thread to start... I'm not sure which version Art got working, hopefully he'll join in or answer a PM.

<img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> If the old machine is running Windows 95, I am guessing it is not a very big hard drive unless you have added one. Check how much room there is available before installing MSIE, that will help determine which version is the most logical.

    Cyberdance,

Thanks. I gave the machine away and don't remember but I think it may be 1 Gig. I'll have to go over and check. It does have I.E. 3.01 on it now but for some reason, which I don't know what it is, that won't allow it to run some program he is trying to run and was told it was because of too old of a version of I.E. I'm not entire convinced that is the problem but promised to try to help him out. He still isn't going to have any Internet connection so I don't see the reason behind updating I.E.

<img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>Hmmmm does not make sense does it? If he is not using MSIE to go online, perhaps he is under the illusion a browser is needed to preview pictures or web sites saved to disc, maybe HTML practice or something, maybe ask what programs he wants to use it for. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> Hope you had a great Christmas.

Re: Which Internet Explorer (I.E. ?????)

ActiveX controls/applets (COM objects) are Windows programs that can be accessed in flexible ways. I'd be surprised if Windows 95 didn't support ActiveX, but possibly IE 3 was not yet aware of them. IE 5 and later can block ActiveX controls from (1) running or (2) downloading, using High Security or custom security settings. I don't know about earlier versions of IE - I was using Netscape at the time...

    jscher2000,

Thanks. I never did really understand ActiveX controls but from what I've been told all that is needed for him to run his program is a newer version of I.E., which, I guess, will give him the ActiveX controls he needs. I still haven't found a site to download the entire I.E. 5.01 or 5.5 version of I.E. even in the other thread you sent me to earlier.

Re: Which Internet Explorer (I.E. ?????)

Hi there and Happy New Year. The website I have that is still active for 5.5 + service releases + tools is
http://"]http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo...lt.asp">http:// http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo...sp2/default.asp[/url]. Sounds like the obvious option for the old machine. I do not know if version 5 of MSIE is still available for download, so I hope the 5.5 site helps. <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29>

    Cyberdance,

Thanks for the link but I must be missing something. I can only download the setup file and I don't want to start it and have it try to install I.E. 5.5. I don't see a link to download the entire I.E. 5.5 program. What am I missing?

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Leif on 06-Jan-03 09:05. to reduce size of attachment.)</P>Cyberdance,

Christmas was great and still going on for us. Hope yours was great also.

I found out what the reason for a newer version of I.E. is, at least what this guy was told. He is trying to run some program and needs "ActiveX" to do so. Now I'm wondering if maybe "ActiveX" can't just be downloaded by itself or is it associated closely with I.E.

I searched the WEB and came up with the attachment but I have no idea which if any of the downloads would help him.

    Thanks.

Re: Which Internet Explorer (I.E. ?????)

I suspect there is no easy way to download the entire IE5 installation files. Certainly no-one has come back with a method in the thread Jefferson linked to above....

    Leif,

I'm afraid you're right. I know I haven't found any way of doing it.

    Thanks.

    Just a thought...
Did any of the old W98 installation CD's ever have an IE installation as an option, and thus installed in a separate folder?

    Download IE Complete!

By some odd quirk of fate, I happened to be searching for something else and came across Post 125233 by Mark - which just happens to include a link to evolt.org.
I followed the link(s) through to the point where I was starting to download all 86MB of IE5.5 - it looks promising!
