Boot.ini (Win XP Pro)

There is a slight problem when my system is booting. It doesn't seem to be anything major, just an annoyance...
When booting, I get a five second black screen delay that says:

Invalid Boot.ini
Booting from C:Windows

Then it continues with no problems. I had read once before that boot.ini contained the instructions needed for multiple OS'es. (which I do not have)!

I've run a search on my system, and the only instance of boot.ini is in the C:Windowspss directory. It is there along with backup copies of win.ini and system.ini. I'm sure those three files are just insignificant backups.

There is absolutely no other instance of boot.ini on my system, hidden or otherwise. Should I create one and place it in the root directory to eliminate the startup error message? Should it be an empty file or should it contain some information? I do not have multiple OS'es, just XPP. And if the only purpose of a boot.ini file is for the use of multiple OS'es, then why is my system upset without it...

Below is the contents of that backup boot.ini file. Not sure what it all means or if it may be useful...

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Micros oft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Re: Boot.ini (Win XP Pro)

Tricky,

Excerpt from MSKB # 31408....

Windows (specifically Ntldr) uses the Boot.ini file to determine which operating system options to display during the startup (boot) process. By default, Boot.ini is flagged as a read-only system file and normally does not require any manual modification.

If you need to change the contents of this file, use the System tool in Control Panel.

There should be at least one copy of boot.ini in yor C: folder, not just in the pss directory. Boot.ini is NOT just for multiple OS's.
The KB article explains what should be in the file and what each item is.

Ricky,
I couldn't find the KB article mentioned above - I was going to add a link to it - but came across these which may help:

330184 : "Invalid Boot.ini" or "Windows Could Not Start" Error Messages When You Start Your Computer

289022 : HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP

(and the one I think Bob referred to )
314081 : The Purpose of the Boot.ini File in Windows XP

Right, Leif,
