Paragraph Mark on Blank Second Page (Word 2000)

I have a problem of a paragraph mark appearing on a blank second page. This means a blank second page will print. I have tried backspacing to remove the paragraph mark but that does not work. I know this is probably a very simple fix, but it drives me nuts.

This often happens if the first page is completely filled with a table.

Possible solutions are to set the empty paragraph to be 1 pt (Format > Font) with 0 pt space before and after (Format Paragraph) or just to set the whole paragraph hidden (Format Font).

I agree in full with Stuart's response - it summed it nicely.

However, it may be that there is one other trick as well.

Word requires that the last entity in a document is a paragraph mark. (That's why Stuart referenced 'tables' because they always require one after them and are the usual cause of this frustration).

If your previous text was a paragraph in its own right, then, while you cannot delete the 'last' paragraph mark, you can delete the one from your last 'real' paragraph and then reset your formatting as required. That is - a document must have one paragraph mark at the end - it does not need to have two <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.

    Jan,

Yet another scenario in which this could occur: if you have a next page section break at the end of the first page - the second page would then have an empty paragraph mark at the start, and you would not be able to delete this paragraph mark by backspacing.

This scenario would be more likely if you tend to work in Print View (in which case the section breaks may not be visible, depending on your View settings for formatting marks in Options) - if you switch to Normal View then the section break would be visible (and deletable).
