Office 2000 install on Windows XP (Office 2000 SR2)

So here's the story: I finally got a new PC (it only took 7 years). OS is Windows XP -- okay. Only Word XP was installed (rather than the entire Office suite). I already had Office 2000/SR2 installed on my old machine and I greatly prefer it to the new and "improved" version. So I went ahead and uninstalled the Word XP, got my CD and installed Office 2K. So far, so good. But when I tried to register, I received a message saying that it had already been registered to another machine!
What do I have to do to tell the great god Microsoft that this is a legit move?

Well, since there seems to be no other suggestions, you may have to bite the bullet and call MS support (on a pay basis, naturally) and talk directly to them. I always hate doing that after paying between $300.00 and $600.00 for their product but sometimes that may be the only solution. I have had an instance where I didn't get charged because they really didn't solve my problem but that seems to be entirely up to the tech you talk to. Good luck.

Call the number on the screen when internet activation fails. It's a free call. As long as the 2000 version isn't OEM, you should get an activation number. Write it down and use it if you need to reactivate on this machine. (Reusing the number only works for office 2000 activation)

Very sorry to tell you this, but after having done nearly exactly the same thing, the only real fix was to call MS tech supp and be persistent until I got a live body that could and would give me the new code. Make a sandwich, have coffee at the machine, use the headphones so that your hands don't fall asleep holding the phone as you wait.
You might think about ordering your next birthday cake now too - it could take that long. You friends will miss you...best of luck...

Why are you calling tech support? it's not a tech support issue - you need to call the activation center. The phone number is listed on the screen when activation fails.

Thanks. With much trepidation I picked up the phone and made the call. Much to my surprise and relief , I got a human almost immediately who actually took my word and gave me the activation number. Maybe the fact that it was 1:00 AM (my time) had something to do with the speed of the response. Anyway, I am a happy camper now and will continue to avoid Office XP as long as possible.
Merry holidays to all.

I think you will find out that the "activation phone number" is going to have a quick responce, this goes for both Windows XP and Office install issues. As they (MS) add other programs to the "activation" list it may slow down, but MS has stated many times that there will not be a problem, and have so far stuck to their word.

Now, it is time to hear from the "Anti Activation" people to get on their soapbox

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Tried that, honestly. It was there I was transferred to tech support. Something I must have said, or this guy's first day on the job, I guess. Nice to know it really should work now.
Thanks for the reminder anyway.
