Real Player

Real Player (free) has changed all of the multimedia extensions. I want to change them back again to be played by Creative's Sound Blaster Live! sound card. I need lots of help doing this, in fact, step-by-step instructions, would do nicely. I'm not a newbie by any means, but there're some things I haven't dabbled in yet. My OS is Windows 98 SE and will be til the cows come home. IE 6.0 is my browser.

I'll really appreciate all the assistance I can get.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Big Doc (my name for you).

I must apoligize for my tardy response, but with the holidays and all, well you know how it is. The answer to your question ' the name of the Creative software program that should be used' It's Creative Play Center 2.0. I will call up the player and look for the ASSOCIATED sound files after the first of the new year. With Christmas, my birthday party and the New Year's celebration all coming at the same time, I am busier than a one-armed paperhanger (grin).

Hang in there Big Doc and I'll get back to you shortly. Patience is a virtue, you know.

...It's Creative Play Center 2.0...

Just a reminder that what you need to know is the specific name of the program file, in case you have to browse for it, like in my second box of the screenshot. The file name might be something like PLAYCEN.EXE or something like that. If you find it in your Start Menu, you should be able to right-click on it and select properties. In the slot called "Target" you'll see the xxxxx.EXE name. Happy Birthday and holiday season. When you get to this project, post back so we know how you're making out.

    Re: Real Player

Case Solved: I downloaded new drivers for my Creative Sound card & during the installation I was asked to select Play Center 2 as my default player for Wave, MP3, Midi, WMA, Ac3, and NVF files.

So I don't have to do anything myself, it''s been done for me. Isn't that great? Thanks for all that good information, which I will retain in case I need them furthur down the line.

As one Colonel Potter used to say: "Okey Dokey!" Glad you didn't have to go thru the manual version.

I'll have to tell the Mods to take away my "star" (just kidding....)

    File Associations, Multimedia and Other

Good morning, Gloria. OK, for starters I think you mean that Real has changed your ASSOCIATIONS, not extensions. Associations is a term given to the record Windows keeps of what software is used to "open" certain files. And yes, Real Player does that. Also, your Sound Blaster CARD is still being used by Real, just not the Creative software. So here's our first question - we need to know the NAME of the Creative software program that should be used. Will you look in your Start Menu and see if you can recognize the name of the Creative player, please? Once we know that, here's what to do: Go ahead and run the Creative player to make sure you "see" the program you're familiar with. If so, look through any and all of its menus to see if you see any place where you can click an option to ASSOCIATE sound files with that program. Some programs have it and some don't. Look carefully, 'cause if you find it, it will save you doing the following steps. If not, here's what you'll have to do in its place:

    1.
Run Windows Explorer and locate an MP3 file. Hopefully you know which folder your music is stored in.

In the right pane, hold down the SHIFT key and RIGHT-CLICK on an MP3 file.

The right-click menu should look similar to the box on the left side of my attachment - we want the OPEN WITH choice. Click that.

You should then see a box similar to the one on the right side of my attachment. Scroll the entire list looking for the Creative program you want to choose.

If you find the Creative program, click it once to highlight it and skip the next step.

If you don't find the program, click the OTHER button and browse your hard drive until you find the EXE file for the Creative program.

When you have found the program, the important step is to click in the box that says "Always use this program....."
Unfortunately, you're gonna have to do this for each type of sound file (MP3, WAV, etc.) for which you want to change the association, but really there shouldn't be that many. Just repeat steps 2 through 7 for each type of file. Good luck and keep us posted.
