Share Printer on Win98SE (5.1.2600 SP1)

First, I hope you had a Merry Christmas and I wish you all the best for the coming new year!

I have a small home network with 2 desktops & 1 notebook. The notebook and 1 desktop run Win98SE and the other desktop runs WinXP. I want to be able to print to a new printer (xmas gift!) which is attached to the notebook (Win98SE) from the WinXP desktop.

When I try to add the printer to the WinXP machine WinXP says the wrong driver is installed on the laptop. (The printer works fine from the laptop.)

So, what do I do? Is this going to work?

What options are you given when the error msg is displayed?

I actually figured it out. First I went to the printer manufacturer's website and downloaded the WinXP driver. Then in WinXP I added the printer as a network printer. Next I specified the printer using "serverprinter". For the final step when I was asked for the driver I typed the path to the downloaded XP driver.

Seems to work now, thanks, but Microsloth sure doesn't make it easy or intuitive!

They don't? I'll take XP's ease of use over the hell that is configuring a printer from the command line and configuration files anyday!

Agreed. Windows sure beats the command line. I recently had the "opportunity" to take a look at the Sabre system. Sabre is the online booking tool that all major North American airlines use. What a shock when I was sent back in time to the early 1980's. For the life of me I can't understand why the travel/airline industry would put up with that crap, especially when Sabre owns Travelocity which is their internet based tool.

Anyway, I agree Windows beats command line prompts hands down in comparison. I'm especially impressed with WinXP over Win9x. I still think they could have done a better job of explaining what I needed to do, though.

p.s. nice site, that broge.com. Sorry to hear about Lady Ashley.

As all Microsoft products, Windows XP thinks that it's smarter than you. The error message you mentioned means that driver was wrong for XP, not wrong in general. And if you are stupid enough to use operating systems other than XP, it's your problem. What you needed to do, install the latest version of Microsoft products everywhere and pay big bucks for it - isn't it clear?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I will grant that Windows has a few rough edges, but over the years it's improved dramatically. And it's far easier in Windows than in nearly any other operating system, even with some of the less desirable things that it tries to do for you automatically (I like to do the thinking instead of the computer).

Thanks, I do appreciate that. And I'm sure that Mom would be glad to know that someone read about her beloved Ashley, too. I put that page up there mostly for her and she can't even bear to read it.
