temp files saving in doc folders (XP)

I had this problem on my old machine with 98. It got really bad. Here I am with a new machine and Windows XP and Word XP, and it's starting to happen again. Occasionally, my temp files get saved in the document folder where the opened document is located.

What causes this? How to stop it?
    Thanks!

Re: temp files saving in doc folders (XP)

Word is supposed to create temp files for various reasons, including speed & safety. See this article for an explanation of how they're used.

However, they should be deleted when Word is closed. They may remain behind after Word crashes. If you haven't lost any information that's contained in the temp files, you should delete them. If you're crashing often, then you need to find the cause & must be aware of what you're doing just before the crash. See Step 1 in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> regarding deleting temp files.
    Cheers,

    Hi Phil,

Thanks for the speedy help. Word hasn't crashed on me at all, so I don't know why this is happening. I'm cleaning them out, though.

    I appreciate your help!

Are your temp files actually ending with .tmp or are they autosave files ending in .asd? They should be deleted automatically when Word closes normally. It may be that you have an add-in that it causing temp files to be created. Look at the other steps that are mentioned in the post I referenced.
    Cheers,

    Phil,
    They are .tmp files only.

Sometimes after you Save and then Save As in a new location, Word will fail to clear the .tmp files from the original location. Other than crashes or chance, this is the only explanation I've found (and it only applies in those cases).
