    Networking - Cable modem

Hi everyone: Hope your Holidays were great!!!

Well I finally have cable out here in the boonies. Without the help of tech (he left cause he couldn't get hooked up), we set up the kit ourselves. Our problem. How do we connect Jonathons computer in his room to the internet too. We downloaded a proxy server, (do we need this, or can it be done without a proxy?). I am having trouble with the proxy settings. I type in Run...command...ipconfig, and I get our settings, do the same on his and get his settings....we are networked...(but can't see each other, and I seem to be pinging myself when I try pinging)...he gets a little computer Icon in his system tray that says he is connected but can't bring up a URL in his browser. I am doing something wrong. Not typing correct IP address's, submask, or gateways into the LAN settings boxes. I know what they are, but they just won't take, or I'm doing something backwards. It really is simpler then what I'm trying to make it isn't it? Could you give me some advice, or tell me what I should say to make it clearer about the mess I got here. We have tried to connect him directly through the hub like we are, but that only allows whoever turns the computer on first to have the connection, so that still don't work. It shows I am getting 100 Mbps, and he is getting 10 Mbps., but double-click on IE on his computer and he gets no web page or physical connection...his Lan settings say he is...but he's not....and he gets nothing. We have tried pinging, don't see each other...proxy settings are screwed up or something. Again, do we even need a proxy? Can it be done without it. And last but not least...thank you for any advice you have.

    Ka-ching,
