    Program Errors

I had a Program Error notification when using Microsoft Word. I suspected that it was a corrupt profile so I blew away my user profile and created another one however I am continuing to get Program Errors. The following is the information from the error screen.
<program name>.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

    Re: Program Errors

What was the name of the program that caused the error?
What version of Word? - have you tried a repair from the Add/Remove Programs setup?

    Re: Program Errors

    Hi Leif,
Thanks for the repsonse. I am using Word 2000. No I haven't used the Add/Repair program function. I have simply created a new user profile in Windows 2000 and re-established the links to the programs I regularly use.

    Give the repair a shot.
We need to determine if it is Word or W2K - or something else - causing the problem. Hence my query about what the name of the prog was....?

Let us know what happens - I'm not sure why it should be a profile based thing unless it is something specific in the startup.

    Re: Program Errors

    Hi Leif,
Everything went fine for a few days and then whammo it was back. As soon as I started Word, the Error message appeared and Word shut down. If I logged on under another Username Word worked fine.
I think I have sussed it out (well I've narrowed it down to 2 options anyway!).
First of all I copied the Word.pip profile from the Administrator profile and pasted it into my User profile. I then logged off and logged back on and still had the problem however after shutting the computer down and restarting it when I arrived home Word was functioning without the Error message.
I also noticed that when the Word application is installed in Windows 2000, a Normal.dot template is created in Documents and Settings/Username/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates directory, as well as the one it creates in Program Files/Microsoft Office/Templates directory. I am assuming that the template created in the Documents and Setting structure had been corrupted thus causing the Word error. I replaced this template with the one from the Program Files structure as they were of a different size and date.
I also reset Word to use the Normal.dot in the Documents and Settings directory as the target Normal template.
Until the next time it crashes I will not know which of the 2 alternatives will solve the problem but I have certainly narrowed it down.

    Regards

    Cliff

    Re: Program Errors

I'm having this very same problem but it's not just with Word; it's with Excel, IE 5.5, etc. I'm running Office 97, IE 5.5, Novell 5, and GroupWise 6 on a Win2000 box. It's so frustrating to be in the middle of something and, whamo! It's gone!

I haven't tried the profile thing but it's worth a shot. Any other ideas before I go that route?

    THANKS! <img src=/S/bananas.gif border=0 alt=bananas width=33 height=35> <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
