Mozilla Send Mail Freeze (Mozilla 1.2.1)

Today, for the second time in the past couple of months I had a "hang" when I hit the send button after composing an email. The first time it happened, I was still running 1.1 (I think) and I un-installed and upgraded to 1.2 which cleared up the problem. At that time, I continued to use ALL the files in my existing profile. Today when it happened, I once more un-installed, blew away the program directories, but NOT my profile, and re-installed 1.2.1 to a clean directory. Still the problem persisted, in all accounts within the email client (I have four). Task Manager says "not responding" and will cleanly stop the app and the browser. Finally, prior to wiping out my PROFILE I deleted several files with timestamps in the area of when the hanging started (see attachment). I figured I didn't have much to lose - I was gonna have to re-create the profile anyway. Well, after I deleted the files in the attachment, the hang stopped and I've been able to send mail ever since. Mozilla has freshly re-created all the files I deleted.

I just wanted to sound out other users to see if anyone has either experienced this problem or read about it elsewhere.....

Uh Oh, replying to my own post! Since I've only gotten 10 hits on my question, I guess all the Moz users are away, huh? Anyway, I did some digging around on the Mozilla sites and found this link which has a description of the files in the user's profile directory. I was looking for a bit more on the files I had capriciously trashed! I think the trouble maker that was preventing me from SENDING mail was the file "somenumber.s" which is the password manager file. That very morning I had experienced trouble checking the email on my web host's account and had tried to re-set the account with them by changing the password. This required me to go into the Password Manager of Mozilla and delete the old entry so it would "ask" me again for my password. As I said, I'm just guessing at all this and the only reason for THIS post is in case it happens to someone else.

Okay Al... you did it.... I didn't think it was possible, but you did it.

I've switched my default broswer to Mozilla (1.2.1), when I'm surfing in Windows.

I know the boss, and the network admin will shoot me.... but at least I can browse with stability .

Now... I suppose you're going to want me to switch in Linux too....

Glad to see you're gonna give it a shot, Chris. But, just so's you know, I OFTEN have both Moz and IE6 open at the same time, depending on what I'm doing. Unlike some folks, I don't have any particular distaste for any browser. The only reason I ever abandoned Netscape was because of all the "AOL" influence involved and the fact that version 6.x was so troublesome. Good luck with your run at it. There's a LOT of stuff on the Mozilla.Org sites, if you can dig it out - which does sometimes get about as difficult as at MS-Land.....

Have you noticed, Al, that when one posts on this site with Mozilla that strange things happen. I was posting a question and several replies, using Mozilla 1.2.1 and after I edit, spell check, etc, then click "post" I get a message that it could not proceed. I back up, and there's my message, just where it should be in the forum.

Heck, I don't know what it is. I've checked out the security settings, cookies, even the German Choclate Cake, and it all seems likes it's where it should be. IE doesn't do this.

I know it's got to be a setting somewhere....Like your files situation, it's probably buried deeply into the guts of the thing!

I'll answer my own post for additional info.....

The behavior I reported above occured when I was posting to the "Word" section. I posted the message above without difficulty....

The Windows XP section posts OK too. Is it the Word folks who are ?

Re: Mozilla Send Mail Freeze (Mozilla 1.2.1)

No, I have never had a problem making a post in any of the dozen or so boards I visit, Bob. As I reported elsewhere, Mozilla and the Lounge don't play well together on that Post Number button at the bottom-left corner, but that's a "programming" thing I can live with. The only REAL Lounge problem I have is when I go in to my profile and try to do something. I ALWAYS forget to plug in the password box and get an error message like you described. But that's user dumb-dumb!

Since we're on the subject, my son had a Moz mail problem a couple of days ago where the mail app was crashing with a Windows98SE error message whenever you open it Since his wife's profile worked OK, I started the usual process of elimination for corrupt files in his profile. Bottom line, the file called PANACEA.DAT was bad and Moz was kind enough to rebuild it (mail folder "cache.") My conclusion is that a fella ought to make a daily backup of the ENTIRE Mozilla profile folder, minus the browser cache of course. For years I've been backing up mail, bookmarks and address book only.
