CR does not activate highlighted button (word97)

The "Find" button in the Find window no longer responds to the Enter key as it used to, but requires a click from the mouse. This occurs in Word but not in other Windows applications.

Any hints on what has changed and how can I restore it to its former status?

    Thank you

    Hi Tony:
Have you installed any new software lately? If you start Word from the command line with
    winword.exe /a
does it still occur? If so, see <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

Thank you Phil, but alas, none of the remedies seem to solve the problem. I might have to reinstall Word, but I'll wait a while before I take such a drastic step.

Does this happen in other Word dialogs? It's truly strange if it happens in only one dialog and nowhere else.

Does the Enter key properly create a paragraph symbol in a document? (You need to be viewing Paragraph marks or have Show All enabled to confirm this.) If you aren't getting pargraph marks in the document, check out <!post=Post #133004,133004>Post #133004<!/post>.

Yes, CR fails to activate all dialog boxes.

    Yes, it does.

    Curiouser and curiouser....

Hi, Tony. You say it "occurs in Word but not in other Windows applications" What about other Office applications like Excel or Powerpoint?

One thing comes to mind: Is it possible you accidently turned on the Filter Keys (an Accessibility Option)? If so, you will have an icon that looks kind of like a stop watch in the system tray (near the time in lower right corner of screen). I turned it on once by accident -- I tend to think as I type and held the right shift key down too long and then hit enter instead of cancel. It took me forever to figure out what I did. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

It does occurs in Excel -- I don't use the others.

I just checked and none of my Accesibility Options are activated.

There is something amiss in the system, however... For instance, out of nowhere, the color of my desktop changed from blue to green last night. I reset it in Display, but go figure...

Re: CR does not activate highlighted button (word97)

I recently had a problem in Word97 similar to this. All of a sudden "control + c" did not copy--but only in Word. It turned out that I had inadvertently assigned a keyboard shortcut to "control + c +" another key. I suspected this but could not remember what I had assigned or what I had assigned it to. What I did was I assigned a shortcut to "control + c" and Word told me that was already assigned and prompted me to elimate one or the other. Now all is well! So, maybe you could try assigning a keyboard shortcut to the keystrokes that would normally do what you are trying to do and discover something that way.

    Good luck!

Re: CR does not activate highlighted button (word97)

Your suggestion led me to wonder about a keyboard-enhancement program (KeyGo) I've been using for many, many years without any problems, and to discover that the problem goes away when that program is disabled. As to why this problem manifests itself without any conscious provocation on my part... and to why it happens only in MS applications and not in others where the keyboard program functions correctly... is one of the mysteries of the inner world of bits and bytes.
