lan/dialup issue with multiple accounts (6.0)

Stumped, here. I have a laptop with OE 6/Windows 2000 Pro. I use it as my work computer, but also have a home dialup account on it. When I send/receive all, I will get messages from my dialup address, but I cannot reply from it without getting an SMTP authentication error. So I end up having to change the sending account from the dialup to the work (LAN) account to send it. At first, I thought it was simply that I had to be connected to the server (through the dialup) to send a message, but if that's the case, I couldn't use my work email - our host is different than our ISP. So, in a nutshell, what I don't understand is (a) why I can receive from the dialup but not send, and ( if I have all the correct SMTP information entered, shouldn't I be able to send/receive from anywhere, provided I have an Internet connection?

Some, not all, ISPs block the use of third party SMTP servers as a spam preventive. Thus, when I travel, I have to change my SMTP server to my dial-up ISP, even though all other indications are that it was sent from my work account. Conversely, when I want to send through my personal account at work, I have to use special SMTP settings and authenticate to the SMTP server using my e-mail username and password.

Check with your dial-up ISP on this. They may well be intimately familiar and have instructions online already. At least one can hope. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I think JSCHER2000 is correct. I had the same problem using Earthlink, see post # 198249, it may help.

Thanks for the help. I was beginning to suspect that it had more to do with the ISP than the OE settings - I guess that's the case.
