Junk Mail

Some time back in a post I commented about the amount of junk mail I received. If memory serves, I think it was Howard K. that replied to me saying he used to set rules but he'd sort of given up and just deleted the junk mail folder periodically. I decided to use the Rules Wizard and recently I've been diligent about creating rules. I now have more than 75 rules set!! I regularly go through my deleted items, retrieve e-mail that is NOT junk and advise my friends & family not to be "cutesy" in the subject line else it may be relegated to the junk mail or deleted folder.
One of the reasons I quit posting at WOPR is directly related to the spam I receive. Does anyone else have this problem with spam/junk? How do you deal with it?
I experimented recently by using a hotmail account and the amount of junk mail received in my inbox decreased dramatically so it obviously does a better job of filtering the unsolicited junk than Outlook (98) does [is it possible I'm missing some setting in OL98 (?)] I am reluctant to give up my regular i.d. & isp for obvious reasons - calendar, reminders, tasks, contacts, etc. but it is apparent that Hotmail seems to provide a better filtering option. Any advice regarding eliminating spam would be appreciated - I'm heartily fed up with the junk messages I receive and especially the porn.

Re: Junk Mail

I use a couple of tricks. First, I own a URL registered with mydomain.com, and i have an email address, junk@gilbert1.net, which is all I ever give out at a web site. Needless to say, anything that comes to it goes to a junk folder.
I also have a key word rule: anything with !!, $, Free, Offer, asm well as a whole bunch of words i dare not list here goes to JUNK [actually Zjunk] which is a subfolder of my Inbox. I can then take a quick glance, and use CTRL-A, Delete to get rid of everything.
Hotmail, btw, is awful. I have one account there to collect error messages for a listserv i own, and the junk mail is incredible. I don't find that at Excite.

Thanks for the info. My Outlook Junk Mail list now numbers 78 rules. I'm finding that Hotmail does do a better job of trashing spam and Outlook trashes e-mail legit mail I want so I've just signed up with excite.com and will give that a try to see if it's any better.

Update! Tried out excite.com suggested by a WOPR Lounger a while back. Appreciate his/her suggestion but I have to tell you that it is no better than my usual ISP or MSN Hotmail. I guess people are paid to troll various sites to suck out e-mail addresses for their potential 'sucker' e-mail lists. Guess I'll just continue to add to my junk mail address/Outlook Rules Wizard and hope for the best. Cheers
