    Picture Preview

Was not sure what to title this post, but a couple of months or so ago I could click click once on a jpeg or a bmp and see a small preview picture out to the left. This is really handy seeing the preview if the name of the file means little and I do not recall any certain event which caused the preview to cease.

I am preparing to move to a new computer, and would like to browse through all my fonts, delete the ones I do not want, then make a zip of the ones I want to keep. Would be nice if I could see a small preview without double clicking on each one.

Does anyone know how to restore the picture preview out to the left?

I don't believe the preview pane works with fonts. You'll probably need a special viewer for fonts, and several applications that do this have been covered in Woody's newsletters. Try searching the Woody's Watch archives for some examples....and certainly, there will be no shortage of Loungers who have ideas as well. You may get better results in the Software Finds and Wants forum if you start looking for font viewers.

    Good luck!!

Thanks Mark, did not know that about the fonts. Any pointers on how to restore the pic preview with other files? I have been back and forth through the Folder/View settings and have not seen anything which might help.

    Re: Picture Preview

Ah, sorry, I wasn't sure if you had found that or not. You should be able to select View - As a Web Page from inside of Windows Explorer to restore the thumbnails. You will then want to select View - Options and make sure that you tell Windows to make all your folders Like Current Folder (the verbiage may vary there, I don't have 98 handy to look). If you forget this last step you will open folders only to find that there is no preview picture.

I believe you can choose the same option from Start - Settings - Folder Options without opening Explorer.

Regarding the fonts...you would have to provide a text sample for the display of the font, and in that limited space you wouldn't see much. Add to that the fact that many no two people will have the same display setting and font sizes, and it's a recipe for a support nightmare. I don't have any basis in fact for that assertion, just my idle musings that I felt compelled to share. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Cheers!

    Re: Picture Preview

Mark is correct on the directions to get the preview window. I just tried it on my Win98 machine, since I couldn't see a preview either. While you're contemplating a new post on the software board, let me just point you to TUDOGS for starters. I did a search for "font" on their page and came up with a few freebies, and one that you can "register" for $5. Personally, I've used MyFonts for a few years ($35) and I think it was well worth the price.

    Re: Picture Preview

Guys, I am still at a loss on this. Did as Mark said and I can see a preview with tiff and bmp files, but not with jpeg. I thought it might have to do with the file association settings for the jpeg viewer since there was no preview action listed, but I am thinking this has only to do with the right click menu for the filetype. Any ideas?

Re: Picture Preview - Found Solution

Ahah! Have stumbled across the solution in the General Windows Forum (where this question probably should have been all along). Evidently sometime in the past one of my graphics software forays took my registry key for the jpg and jpeg filetypes. Long and short of it is I copied the registry key from the tiff filetype (which previewed OK) to the jpg and jpeg registry keys. Voila!

Thanks for your help Mark and Big Al!
