    Dell lattitude C610

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> loungers

My organisation is getting me a new laptop. Not yet sure what configeration they will supply - that will depend on how much money is left in last year's budget.

Has anyone out there had any experience with this model.

Wouldn't have been my first choice, but employees can't be choosers!

I can't say I've dealt with that particular model, but I will say that in my I.T. days, I had nothing but good experiences with Dell, their service and support was second to none, and their products were good. If they failed, they had no problem fixing the issue, and they don't seem to load too much unnessesary stuff on thier equipment.

Overall, I'd say you're in for a treat. The base system has pretty good specs, for a laptop...

The Latitude is Dell's more boring, corporate product, but they're reasonably solid. We had a spate of them where the power supply or heat sink fan developed a terrible buzzing, and Dell sent us replacements to be delicately swapped for the noisy ones. Other than that, only isolated problems.

By the way, I find it good to push back on the first e-mail response from Dell's tech support. In almost every case the AI system (machine or human, I'm not sure) sent me quite bizarre instructions, and I had to send a message along the lines of *did you read what I said?!* before getting a real answer.

    Enjoy it!

I second your suggestion re. email responses. Recently, I had a "noise" problem on my Dell. I found every tech. bulletin on the issue, did all the troubleshooting, and detailed the results, only to get back a "canned" email that told me to do the same thing, as well as other suggestions that were unrelated. It took 3 more emails before I got a human who was reading and responding. In the end, though, the problem (replacement of a fan) was solved, but it did take persistence.

Actually I had been hoping for one of these. which is definetly NOT boring. $3299 buys you a lot these days! (and it does office & windows)

    Yes, it's the perfect mobile DVD player with that wide screen. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

And not bad for games, it appears.

My Dell arrived today! Setup was a breeze. I've also jumped from W95/O97 to XP Pro/2000. Woo oooh. Been spending the afternoon clicking and exploring. (I had to say that I was a 'power user' before they would give me XP) Very nice machine!
