Moving pst files between two PCs (Outlook 2000)

    Hello,

I thought I was being smart when I copied outlook.pst from one machine on to a CD and deleted it from that machine since someone else was going to use it for a few weeks.

When I tried copying it into Windows>Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook on my regular PC, nothing worked and I get all kinds of error messages including, "Properties for this service must be defined prior to use", "You don't have permission to access this pst file" etc. I then tried File>Import>Import from another program or file>Personal folder file, but again without success.

I then tried the File>Import>Advanced options in Eudora but got a new error message- "There was an error logging on to the MAPI subsystem. Conversion cannot continue".

I suppose my initial method of copying the pst file on to a cd in the hope of recovering it was silly. However, I am stuck with two years worth of email that I can't access in any way. Could someone please help?

CD? That probably means it is Read-Only.
Right_click the file on your hard disk, select Properties, then de-select Read-Only.
    And try again....

    Hello Leif,

Your tip worked like a charm. I can't thank you enough because my next two weeks of work depended on this.

Tonnes of thanks and I really wish you the best in the New Year.

Yeh, this is a common bug-a-boo. Sometimes the copy process will remove the RO flag; sometimes not. I've never figured out a pattern. Have you?

Never done it enough to notice.

It couldn't be the difference between a CD-R and a CD-RW could it?

This was a CD-R, alright. I vaguely remember about cd burning software having some kind of a setting that prevents this, but I seem to have missed it in this case. I was using Easy CD Creator.
