    Office XP Startup (Office XP Pro)

    I just installed Office XP Pro onto Windows XP Home SP-1. The PC is 1.4 Ghz Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM. I noticed that when each Office program starts that a task pane appears on the right hand side. It allows a user to choose what to open. I noticed when I ran a macro in WORD or EXCEL that after the macro ran the task pane disappeared even if the check-box on the pane was checked to start at startup.

    Is there a fix for this idiosyncrasy

    As long as I know, there isn't. After installing third-party add-ins, you must to open Task Pane manually.
    But you can create a simple macro to open Task Pane:

    Sub TaskPane()
    '
    ' Macro to open TaskPane
    '
    CommandBars("Task Pane").Visible = True
    End Sub

    You can name it Autoexec and it will start each time you start Word (the same for Excel, etc.)

    Another way around this is to edit the registry (make a back up of the registry first!!!)

    Start regedit
    Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0Common General
    Create a new DWORD (Edit>New>DWORD) and name it DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane
    Modify this key (Edit>Modify) and set the value to 1
