OE6 Message Properties (OE6.00.26)

Hello:

I have noticed recently that I cannot get the properties of a message from Hotmail by right-clicking on the message and then right-clicking on "Properties" in the pull-down menu. This is especially annoying because a lot of the messages are porn and I would like to block them. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>
I have implemented the filters in Hotmail and now have the full complement of 36 used up. BTW, I do not seem to be able to make use of "or" or "and" in laying out the Hotmail filters at the Microsoft web site and of course OE 's own filters don't work on Hotmail.
Are there any suggestions that I could try to combat this ? I have MailWasher on my POP3 accounts, but it is not very useful with webmail. I suppose that I could always abandon Hotmail. <img src=/S/bouncenburn.gif border=0 alt=bouncenburn width=31 height=31>

MailWasher can be used with Hotmail.

I've tried using MailWasher with Hotmail but I must be doing something wrong, because MW doesn't ever find any mail there.

Can you suggest what the OE settings should be ? I think that I have tried all the obvious settings but I know from experience how readily I can miss things.

Drats! I don't use Hotmail myself. Have you ever gone to the MailWasher Forum? http://www.ComputerCops.biz ...MailWasher will be found when you look to ,the left side in 'Forums', click that...another page comes up, scroll down until you see the 'The MailWasher Community'. They have plenty of questions posted by users and really fast help with the answers. This is the Official MWasher Forum.
I really wish I could answer with something helpful other than giving you the Forum website.

Thanks. I guess that I should have mentioned that I did try the MailWasher forum. One of the administrators replied that he also had trouble using MailWasher with Hotmail - there is some difficulty with accessing webmail servers.

Is there anybody who can answer my original question: why is the "Properties" option greyed out when I right-click on a message from Hotmail ? Is this a function of Hotmail or a clever programming trick used by spammers ?

is the message completely downloaded when you try it? you can only get properties once the message is completely in the local store.

The message header has been downloaded to OE and appears in the Message window ( not the Preview pane ). If I right-click on the message, it turns blue and a drop-down menu list appears. The last menu item,"Properties" , is greyed out. As you can imagine, I am not keen to open what are obviously porn spam messages, if that is what you mean by "completely downloaded".

I have tried accessing "Properties" while using IE6 at the Hotmail site but this doesn't seem to work either.

Is there some other menu item that will give me some insight into something that will allow me to filter it out? There are only very simple filters available at Hotmail.

I hope that I am describing this properly.

is it grayed out on the file menu too? (i have it on both menus)

to see the properties from the website, you need to show the full header, which requires opening the message i think - it's safer to turn off the preview pane in oe and view the header.

The greyed-out "Properties" menu item only seems to occur with Hotmail messages in OE. I can right-click on a POP3 message header without opening it and "Properties" is available.

I can only assume that this has something to do with web mail, especially those messages classified as "Junk" by Hotmail. I have put all my "allowed" senders into Hotmail and will increase the sensitivity so that everything else will get blocked. I don't get much serious email via Hotmail anyway. I am just trying to avoid accidents or something slipping by the AV ( Panda v7 that updates itself at least once a day ). Just paranoid, I guess.

It's something unique to your account or installation - I can see properties of my hotmail messages. i use less agressive filters, but i really don't think that is the cause.

Typically, its because the message needs to be downloaded into OE before you can see properties and if you click too soon (as the message downloads), it will be grayed out. It happens to me often with mewsgroups... but never with hotmail, although i don't check my hotmail account much, too much spam. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Thanks for the suggestion of proceeding slowly. I'll watch that to make sure that I'm allowing all the subject and senders to appear. I take it that you are NOT suggesting that I should open any of these messages in order to check the properties ?

This may just be a quirk of my setup but I can't think of what it might be, since I haven't changed anything on OE in a long time.

Just to follow up on my earlier reply. I uninstalled my copy of MW and cleaned the registry with JV16. Then I downloaded a new copy and installed it with the same settings.
Mirabile dictu! It downloaded the only Hotmail message available. I am cautiously optimistic that it will continue to work.
