Preview Pane - Turning off (2000)

    Hi,

I'm trying to turn the Preview Pane off for all Outlook email folders in one step but having mixed results. When I go to View > Current View > Define Views, click the Modify button, the Other Settings button and uncheck Show Preview Pane, this works on only some of the mail folders but not all. Could this be a bug in Outlook? Also, is there a way to turn off the Preview Pane permanently at the Registry level?

    Thanks for your help.

I turned my previews off, folder by painful folder <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>, when I first learnt about the associated virus danger.

I did a hunt for a global change, without success. For what it's worth, I recall that if you create a new subfolder and the parent has preview off, then the child will be the same. Probably not a lot of help, it would mean pruning back your folders & recreating them.

start outlook with the /nopreview switch to disable it forever. To turn it off for all the folders but leave it available, start outlook with the /cleanviews switch and then go to define views and disable it. You're seeing mixed results because some of the folders have modifed views and they aren't using the global view.

if you have the latest Outlook and IE patches, the preview pane is secure, you are less likely to get a virus from using it than you are from opening a message.

Wish I'd known about these switches when I changed my almost 50 folders (since trimmed back to a dozen with better use of categories).

It's a pity MS fails to make such info readily available in the Help files. I found the switches you suggested in the KB article 197180 , along with a few others that might come in handy. I guess my search way back when was less than brilliant, or the article didn't exist.

With 50, it almost pays to use VBA. <!post=Post #135826,135826>Post #135826<!/post> gave the code for turning off preview in one folder; one would have to add some code to loop through all the other folders... I know I've seen it here somewhere...

Another, probably effective, solution, but, alas too late. Thanks anyway.

Now that you've reminded me about VBA, it probably would have been even quicker and simpler to use AutoIt, or a simple keyboard macro recorder to create a simple script or macro.
