Recurring 'Save changes' for certain files (XP (2002) SP 2)

I have a certain document (my resume) that, every time I open it, Word will ask me if I want to save changes. It does not matter if I make changes or not. I still get asked. I can simply open the document and then immediately close it, and I get asked if I want to save changes.

I do not have this issue with other documents. I have gone into the VBA code and found nothing there. In fact, there is no VBA code with this document !

Any suggestions ? I can attach the file if that is required.

    TIA

There probably is a field code in your document that is being updated when you open it. (Certain date fields, and some other fields are updated when you open a document.) This might or might not be visible If you drop down the Undo list on the toolbar (since it is automated, it might not appear). Press Alt+F9 to display your field codes...

Another possibility is that the document's template contains some unique AutoOpen or Document_Open code that makes a change to the document or one of its properties when you open it.

The only code that I could see in the document was a page code in the footer. And there is no template document items that I am aware of.

Well... maybe post your document and someone with XP can try it (I still run Word 2000). Good luck.

Hi, Chris. Is it possible that the last time you saved it you had a different printer selected? Maybe it's repaginating in accordance with your current printer. Other possibilities include font substitutions (Tools / Options / Compatability).

    I am attaching the document.

I can't believe the issue is a printer driver, because it does this every time. If I say 'yes' to save changes, close the document, open it again and immediately close it, I still get the message.

There was a font substitution (Times New Roman PP for Times New Roman TT or True Type) in the one you provided. I opened a new document and used Insert / File and was able to eliminate the substitution. See if the attached works better.

    Oops! Edited to include attachment

    This worked great !

How on earth did you know a font substitution was going on ??

Re: Recurring 'Save changes' for certain files (XP (2002) SP 2)

Good morning, Chris. Since you and Jefferson had already ruled out updating fields, and Saving the file with a certain printer selection didn't resolve the issue, font substitution was the likely cause. Word makes font substitutions when there is a font in a document which doesn't exist on the host machine. What was happening was that each time you opened the file, Word would substitute the document's font (which doesn't exist on your machine) with the closest font it could find.

Generally one would go to Tools / Options / Compatibility and click on Font Substitutions. Word presents a dialog that shows the original font on the left and the font it's using to replace it on the right. Word allows the user to then designate the font to be used and indicate that the change should be permanent. However, when I made the change there it mucked up the bullet points. I thought at that point that possibly the file's container was corrupt and used Insert / File as described in my post above. I prefer that method because it grabs all the formatting (including headers and footers) and leaves the junk behind.

This is where I was trying to reply from in my post yesterday. If this gets through there must have been a problem with my IE.

As I said yesterday I have been having the same problem as Chris for sometime now. Can you please look at the attached and let me know if there is anything wrong.

    Hi Phil:
At first blush, I can see nothing "wrong" with your document. It uses a standard Arial font, so there shouldn't be a font substitution problem. You have fields, but they don't automatically update. Have you checked by starting word from Start/Run & typing
    winword.exe /a

    Phil

Thanks for your prompt reply. I don't have a problem opening and closing the documents in the normal way, it is only when they are opened over the intranet that I have the Open/Save dialog pop up.

All of the documents contain many hyperlinks to allow movement between them. Could this be causing the problem?
    cheers

    HI Phil:
I'm not sure and I don't have access to an intranet to check it. Hopefully, someone else will. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Re: Recurring 'Save changes' for certain files (XP (2002) SP 2)

    Hi, Phil!

Phil Carter's PM to me said:
<hr>My specific problem is that I run our documentation system over an intranet and everytime I move between, backwards or forwards, documents I get the message "Changes have been made do you want to save the document". The system was fine under MS O2K it wasn't until I installed MS OXP that I started having the problem ( the same as Chris).<hr>
<img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>I'm not entirely certain how these things work on an intranet, nor do I have access to test either. I did notice that the hyperlink addresses are dynamic so that they assume a common location on each of the company's workstations it will point to the appropriate place. An interesting concept. But I don't think that would cause the behavior. And you're right, everything else appears quite normal.

Anyone else have any clues for Phil?
    Karen
