    Re: Media Player 9

On XP, the only way that I've seen is to perform a rollback using System Restore. Since that feature isn't in any other Windows version save ME, I do believe that once it's installed....you're stuck with it.

Is it causing problems? I know the desire to get rid of a piece of software that you don't use all too well, but if you don't use it, it shouldn't be obtrusive - and it doesn't eat up much space on disk once installed.

Hey Mark! Happy New Year! You are getting to be my main man!

The system restore looks exactly like what I want. I can see the exact time that I install MP9 yesterday. Do you know if the rollback will affect any data?

It will affect any changes you have made AFTER the rollback date, Colin. <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>

I have installed ver 9 and it just takes some getting used to it. Like Mark said, it doesn't take up much room anyway, so wait till you do a clean reinstall, if you really want to get rid of it.

    Re: Media Player 9

Further to Bob's statement....this is why I put my data on a separate partition and turn system restore off for that partition. I don't believe it affects anything in My Documents for example, but I can't say yes or no to that one. For the record I turn off SR for data partitions because I don't think it needs to chew up any more space than it already does.

Since you installed it yesterday, you should be able to roll back without any problems - just be aware of the caveat that Bob pointed out.

I've used System Restore a few times myself, and it HAS NOT touched my data. As my notebook only has one WinXP partition... I got lucky (a few times).

    Re: Media Player 9

Thanks Chris. I decided to go ahead with the restore (it was only 2 days back) and it looks like it worked perfectly. I don't think (or haven't noticed if) I lost any data.

I was getting pretty disappointed with Microsoft until XP came along. Now I think it they are really on to something good!

    Well, so far so good.

What are the opinions of Media Player 9? Ho was it a dog? What takes getting used to. One of Woody's watches seemed relatively enthusiastic about it?

    Re: Media Player 9

It's faster and cleaner than previous versions. I use it mostly for music videos, and it's a lot better than 8 or before. It has a very cool little toolbar feature (right click on the toolbar, and select media player) that will minimize down to about a 2" or less window showing video or visualizations while you surf or work. Very picture in picture, works well, and looks neat. There is beginning to be more support for 9series video (check out the Lord of the Rings trailer at 700kbps!!!). Kind of funny though in the WMP 9 Series Home Page, there are links to news video sources...that only work with Real Player!!!!

Thanks, I might give it a try - though I've not been keen on media player since skins were introduced. The whole interface just seems to keep getting bigger.

On a 'slightly' different tack - my Media Player 9 doesn't play video at all. Seems to have a problem with vCD, MPG files et al. Any ideas?

Download and install Windows Media Codecs. Ignore blah-blah-blah that it is for "network administartors".

    Re: Media Player 9

Thanks, done that but still no pictures. The sound is OK but I've tried downloading the .asx files from the windowsmedia site and there's no video. Any other ideas?

    Re: Media Player 9

Had a similar problem with WMP 8 after updating display adapter driver (Nvida Driver V4.0.72) from MS windows update with XPH.

    Solution:
    1. Rollback driver in Device Manager
    or,
    2. Download and install latest driver from manufacturer website.

Maybe this will help with your problem.

Fantastic - what can I say?! Thank you, I now have all the bits & pieces and can watch videos too. It was the ATI Driver which I've now updated via the Fujitsu Siemens website. Thanks again.
