    Start Up Menu

A friend has a compaq computer with Windows ME. After a variety of problems, we have the computer up and running. But whenever he starts it up, the MS WINDOWS MILLENIUM STARTUP MENU comes up with the four options 1.) Normal, 2.) Logged 3.) Safe Mode and 4.) Step by Step Confirmation and with the ticking clock starting at 30 seconds. If he waits for the 30 seconds, the computer starts normally and all is well. How do we get rid of the START UP MENU process.

There is a file in the root directory of the boot drive {normally C:} called MSDOS.SYS. This is a plain-text file but is normally a hidden, system file. So, you will have to have Folder Options set to SHOW hidden and system files in order to see it. Edit it with a text editor such as Notepad (NOT a word processor program!) and see if it contains a line called BOOTGUI=1. If not, type it in. Also check for a line called BOOTMENU=1. If that is there, change the 1 to a 0 (zero). That should do it. You'll have to save the file and reboot to check. If not, post back and we'll look further.

The MSDOS.SYS file is explained at the MS Knowledge Base site.

    Re: Start Up Menu

That's how I setup my pc...because I hated trying to keep hitting 'del' or whatever 'f' key to get into SafeMode! To me this is easier. I also hit #1 within 3 seconds anyway...but since I only use this screen when rebooting, I very seldom see it, unless I need to get into Safe Mode...on 24/7 <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Just follow the advice given by bigal on how to 'undo', so you can get a 'normal' setup for your pc.

    Re: Start Up Menu

Just came across your post - many thanks! This saved me from asking about this phenomenon! I reloaded WinME over the original installation and then found this four item menu each time I rebooted or started up.

BUT, is this connected to the disappearance from the opening WinME splash screen of the computer builder's name? Not that this is a problem, but I'd like to know where one might go to add some text to that opening screen.
