Unexplained Font Change

I had applied Gill-Sans (Type 1-ATM font) to a paragraph. I wanted a subscript character scaled 125% because it looked rather too small to me. The character changed to a serifed font, which looked like Times New Roman to me. However, the Formatting Toolbar showed Gill-Sans and checking for Font Substitution in Tools-Options-Compatibility also showed no substitution. Can anyone explain? This happens for some fonts, and does not, for yet others. Usually I have this only in Type 1 fonts, not true type. But if both types of fonts are scalable, this should never happen. Can anyone explain?

A Type 1 fonts have two files associated with it, one with a .pfb ext and one with .pfm.

It may be worth checking if you ahve boh types of file for your Type 1 fonts. It's just something worth checking.

Thanks for your input.

Both are there in the proper directories. No solution yet.
Could it be that a font file is corrupt? Just thinking aloud.

Corrupt font it may be. If you have ATM (Adobe Type Manager) you can view the font in different point sizes, and that should show up any problems.

Check to see if you have a True Type font with the same name - I believe that can lead to problems.

The font isn't corrupt; and the misbehaviour on scaling up still happens. Help!

I'm not saying that I can help, but could you clear up a few things. Does the misbehaviour occur on screen or printing or both. Have you Adobe Type Manager installed. Have you a True Type font with the same name ?

Sorry for the questions, but the answer might be there somewhere.

Both, screen and printing. TT Fonts have slightly different names. ATM is installed. No answer yet.

Just as a test uninstall the True Type version (move to a folder other that Fonts) and see if that makes a difference.

Re: Unexplained Font Change

Thanks a heap, Andrew, for sparing your time and "mind space" for my problem.

I have actually done this already; indeed, I uninstalled ATM and all Type 1 fonts, and saw that there was no problem with any Truetype font.

Thereafter, I left the ATM fonts on, and uninstalled Truetype. All these fonts are now in a separate backed up directory.

All this, alas, to no avail.

Time to surrender and do it manually, I think.

Based on quick testing, subscript is equivalent to:

Lowered 1.5 pt + Size reduced 33%

You could create a little macro to calculate and apply this. You could have an inputbox for percentage reduction, or just adjust it after the fact. Since I have never used scaling, I just reduced 12pt to 8 and 10pt to 6.5. YMMV.

Yes, I think that is best.

Maybe it could be posted on some other Word newsgroup/ discussion board.

Your estimate of subscript is fairly in accordance with mine, but the idea of using Excel to do the needful is a good idea.

Thanks once again.
