Table of Contents Page Numbers (Word 2002)

I'm updating a manual and I'm having trouble modifying the numbering displayed by the Table of Contents.

I need to display page numbers for each topic within each chapter but not for the chapter itself. Try as I might, by repeated formatting of the styles that I am using for the table of contents, I can't get the page numbers to disappear for each chapter without the topic page numbers disappearing in the TOC.

The only place that seems to have an option is the option in the dialog at Edit - Insert - Index and Tables - Table of Contents - Show page numbers, but this affects all numbers, not just a particular style.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    TIA

I don't know if you can do that but there is certainly a workaround if no other suggestions are forthcoming.

I would format the TOC style for the Chapter so that the tab stop for the page number doesn't have any leading characters and is positioned way off the right hand side of the page (eg at 30cm). This means the TOC will actually include the page numbers but they won't be visible on the page.

You can use this same method to hide paragraph numbers on the left hand side too.

An excellent piece of lateral thinking . The page numbers are now sitting way off the edge of the page, invisible to the eye and, I would guess, the printer.

Solutions like this are sometimes more satisfying than finding out that there is a built in feature

    Thanks Andrew!

Tony - please review post 164841. Contained therein is a description and example of the switch to use in the TOC field to suppress the page number from displaying at the desired TOC level. It's not something you can do through styles. It is pretty simple to do within the TOC field itself.

Let me know if this seems like gobbledygook to you - and I'll explain further.

Thanks Anne - found the switch and I will try it tomorrow (it's a bit late here now...). Took a bit of time finding the post though. It didn't find the post number for some reason.

The link Anne was pointing to was 164841 but you need to get there using something other than search.

She was right on the money with the link so using the syntax she described will avoid the kludgy TOC style modification that I told you to use. The important switch is the "n 4-4" bit

Re: Table of Contents Page Numbers (Word 2002)

Thanks to you both - the second method also worked. I used Right Click - Edit Field to add the switch via the dialog in the end because I couldn't get it to work initially. I ended up with...

    { TOC t "ModuleTitle,1,SectionHeading,2" n "1-1" }

by adding the switch on the end using the dialog box.

I think that the double quotes are important around the level numbers "1-1". I also couldn't get it to work if the switch appeared immediately after the t.

Thank you both once again for your help

Thanks Andrew! I haven't visited the lounge for awhile & forgot to insert the link to the post correctly.

I think *you* are the kind person who initially introduced me to the various switches to be used in the TOC field!
