Icons not showing as read

I've noticed the last few sessions that I'll go into a thread, read the messages and even make a post myself, and when I go back up to the forum index, the NEW flag will still be posted. I just saw this on the Outlook forum, but I've seen it elsewhere too. What gives?

Re: Icons not showing as read

I have to confess that the read flags are still a bit erratic in this version but I think in this case it might be because there are other threads/messages in the forum that you haven't read.

Re: Icons not showing as read

Just a minor point, but I think that if you select a thread by clicking on the first mail, you get the <IMG SRC=http://www.wopr.com/w3timages/new.gif> flag against new mail.
But, if you click on a mail that is showing in the forum as being unread, you don't.
But it may just be that my glasses need cleaning.
Again.

I'm never quite sure what's going on. I know there's always been heavy ongoing discussion over on the wwwthreads board about how this should be best done and it still continues...

Re: Icons not showing as read

It took me awhile to figure out how to tell which posts I've read but what I determined is that the first post in a thread shows the icon as orange/unread if there are any unread posts in that thread. What I do now is open the initial listing in a thread showing an orange icon and then scroll down the thread looking for the "new" icon to the right of the title. Even if you post something yourself, it looks like the board considers it is unread by you until you have reopened that thread.

Re: Icons not showing as read

Well, on that particular thread, there were only 3 messages, and I read the other two and posted one myself. But when I went back to the forum index, that thread showed a NEW flag but included my response in the count.

Re: Icons not showing as read

I've noticed that, too. When I read all the messages, but post a response, my response doesn't show as read, even if I wait for it to come up on my screen.

But I've also noticed, on ocassion, that I'll read posts & then come back later & they'll not be marked as read...maybe it's telling me I didn't read carefully enough, that's a scary thought.

Re: Icons not showing as read

When you say show as unread, you get the 'NEW' flag against your own post?
Odd - I don't. (IE5.5)

I suspect most of these discrepancies result from coming in via an email link; it doesn't know who you are.

Could be - I never use the e-mail links.
You mean other people actually close their browser ?

Eileen, I'm not always sure who I am! But I never log out and my username shows up on the screen, so it at least has a vague idea of who I am, right?
