Print Preview v. Print View (Word XP SP2)

I'm slowly getting used to Word XP after having used Word 97 and Word 2000 for a long time. I have noticed one really strange thing in Word XP that I never experienced in the earlier versions. I'm wondering if others have seen this.....

I have been in the habit of preparing my documents, editing, spell checking etc and finally formatting for printing. I always used the Print Preview to see what I'd get (Ctrl + F2). What I've found is that the Print Preview does not agree with the Print View in Word XP. The Print View is what ultimately is printed. I'll just use that from now on. But doesn't it seem weird that Print Preview and Print View don't agree?

Or, have I messed up yet another configuration setting?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

    Hi Bob,

Can you be more specific and give an example of what differs. When you say Print View do you mean Print Layout view?

Have you checked the printer settings for paper size etc?

Look forward to hearing more, I always seem to get printing anomolies so am interested in any potential bugs!!!

    Hi Bob:
I don't have Word 2002. However, in any version of Word, there may be differences. For example, if you are viewing hidden text in Page Layout (Print Layout in Word 2000) view and you have Tools/Options/Print tab/hidden text unchecked, then hidden text will show in Page Layout but not in Print Preview. There is also an option under Tracked Changes to highlight or not highlight tracked changes in the printed document.

    Bob,

It does seem weird. However, I recall a thread, probably on the Word lounge maybe some last year, that discussed this. I did a search on print preview but could not find it. (Maybe the mind is playing tricks). What I recall was that one of the "views" took account of more of the factors (eg, the actual print driver to be used) that would govern the actual printing than the other. The other view was an approximation.

That's about the best I could do. Maybe one of the moderators will find the post (or tell me to find my marbles).

Re: Print Preview v. Print View (Word XP SP2)

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I apologize for not getting back sooner; this has been one of those days.

By "Print View" I'm referring to the File > Print Preview choice. I happen to have an icon on my toolbar for it. The pagation differs from what is displayed by the Print Layout, which is the View > Print Layout. The page breaks appear in Print Layout exactly as they print. However, on the Print Preview, the page breaks may be off by as much as a paragraph.

Today I noticed that on documents that are completely new with this PC, the two previews seem to agree. However, we have some large documents that have similar structure and we barrow from the older copies to make the new documents. It is those where this phenomenon appears. So, I conclude that there must be some spurious codes somewhere in the old documents that causes this. The older documents, by the way, were created with Word 2000. In fact my business partner still uses Word 2000. It is I who ventured forth into the new and unknown!! <img src=/S/cauldron.gif border=0 alt=cauldron width=20 height=20>

We are doing nothing different than we've done for years, first with Word 97, then 2000 and now 2002. I may just have to clean up the documents and get rid of the crud!!

Take a look at the Compatibility checkboxes (Tools>Options...>Compatibility) and see if any of those version-specific choices are causing the difference. This assumes you have 10-20-30 minutes to switch them on and off individually and in different combinations and compare the views.
