    What's writing to my disk?

I'm trying to run Norton Wipeinfo. While it's running it keeps restarting because of a write to the disk. The Norton website says to try starting Windows in safe mode and then running Wipeinfo. It still keeps restarting due to disk writes. So then I tried another of their suggestions and set the Windows Swap file to be permanent not dynamic, unplugged it from my internet connection, and then started in safe mode. It still does it. When it's running in safe mode, if you press Ctrl-Alt-Del it shows nothing else running apart from Explorer. I've also tried running in normal mode but stoppping everything that's running apart from Explorer and Systray. Still no joy.

    So what is going on?

    Hi Ian

If your'e looking for some way of determining what else may be running, you could try Process Explorer from SysInternals.

    Have a Great day!!!

Maybe you should try a differant software program that does the same thing [Wipe]and see what happens. I have had problems with Norton in the past. I don't use Norton because it Spider Webs itself and I hate that , but to each his own. You can find several free downloads that do what your trying to do with Norton.

Re: What's writing to my disk?

I had the same problem when running GoBack, and wondered whether Norton Ghost or Drive Image (or whatever ithe background program is called in SystemWorks) causes any related shenanagins; I suppose the System Restore function in WinME or XP could also be a culprit. Incidentally I experienced a nearly disastrous system crash when trying install GoBack from Systemworks 2003 on my wife's WinME machine, I think I had Win System Restore turned off like it says you need to do, making me suspect a conflict between GoBack and one of the Systemworks utilities (brings back the days when Mcaffee bundled Guard Dog with its Office utility set).

I believe that may be the problem; if there is a way to disable any System Restore or Drive Image progams you might try that, although this may leave you vulnerable to data loss unless you back up system data first. I would like a solution myself to run Wipe Info on free space as well as Speed Disk. I have not found Safe Mode to go deep enough to avoid that category of "Restore" programs (for lack of a better term) that continually write in the background in order to preserve a current snapshot of drive contents. There was some sort of program that may have worked for me in the past which goes into ScanDisk directly from boot (anyone remember the name?), although this wouldn't help you run WipeInfo on free space.

You should still be able to wipe folders with WipeInfo, which of course is less convenient than being able to delete a bunch of things and then wipe free space.

    Hope this makes sense,

Thanks for the thoughts, but I am not running anything like System restore or Drive Image.

Re: What's writing to my disk?

OK, so that can't be it.

I guess I've overgeneralized from problems I experienced with GoBack writing to disk when I've attempted to defrag and whatever program writes to disk when WipeInfo is trying to run.

Perhaps it is a question, as someone suggested, of using the "wrong" utility; however it would be nice to discover the source of the conflict given that Norton and Roxio programs are not exactly off the beaten track.

I'll have to watch this thread to see if an explanation or solution emerges.

Re: What's writing to my disk? - SUCCESS!

OK - I've succeeeded. I used the system configuration utility and unchecked several things I thought might be causing the problem, without success. So I can report that it wasn't Taskmon.exe which I wondered if it could have been. Then I went back and unchecked almost everything that wouldn't stop the computer from running, and then found after restarting that Wipe Info went all the way through. I think the culprit must have been either Load Power Profile, Still Image Monitor, or Norton Symtray. I'm afraid I didn't have the time or patience to check by trying them one at a time.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: What's writing to my disk?

When I am defragging I have to turn my screensaver off as it interrupts the defrag when it (the screensaver) kicks in. Could this be the problem? ...J.Till

Give us a screen shot of your "Task Manager" so we can see what is running.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: What's writing to my disk?

Nothing is! It still got interrupted even when I stopped everything except Explorer and Systray, so it must have been something that didn't show on there. But as noted the other day, I have now got Wipe Info to work by deselecting almost everything in the System Configuration utility, restarting, running Wipe Info and then selecting the processes again afterwards. I didn't track down exactly what was doing it but having got the thing to work I am now content.
