Navigating Through Numbered Lists (2002/SP-2)

    Hi:

I had XP installed 2 days ago and did a search this morning for "one" of the problems I'm having. When navigating through a numbered list (Control+Down [or up] Arrow) the number (or alpha character) is gray-shaded then when doing the control+ key again, the cursor moves to the text after the number. Any ideas on how to navigate through without the number being grayed then going to the text?

    Thanks,

Hello, Leanne. What you're seeing is a new "feature" in XP. What you may wish to do instead of Ctrl + up/down is use the Document Map to navigate. When you click on an item in the map it takes you to that paragraph. Of course, you sound like a keyboarder to me (so am I), and frankly MS wasn't thinking of us when they added many of XP's new features.

The feature aspect of this is that you can now double-click the number and it opens the Bullets & Numbering dialog so you can customize in case you want to change it. Of course, there's always a down side (or two in this case)... you've already illustrated one. The less obvious one here is that each time the Customize numbering box is opened, it creates and attaches a new List Template to the numbering scheme you're in, and abandons the prior one... too many abandoned list templates will create what is known as "spaghetti numbering" and Word ultimately gets confused.

    Hi Karen:

Thanks - not what I was wanting to hear. I was hoping that somewhere that nice little "feature" could be turned off.

Now, if I could get used to applying a style through the format/style box without inadvertantly going to "new" first then having to escape and press apply. So many extra steps here.

    Again, thanks
