    Word program locks up (2002)

My Word program has recently started locking up for no apparent reason. Does anyone know if there is a fix? I'm running XP.

I don't have Word 2002, but I can tell you that you need to provide a little more information. What do you mean by locking up? When you're opening a document, editing a document, etc.. Also, take a look at <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

First an individual doc will lock up or stop responding. Afterwards each document will stop responding one at a time until the entire program eventually shuts down.

I'm sorry, but I think more detail is needed. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Programs crash for numerous reasons--corrupt files, corrupt programs or dlls, conflicts with other programs, etc.

What exactly are you doing when the program locks up? What do you mean by lock up--do you get an hourglass or message? How many documents are open when this happens? Are you still able to access some other documents when one stops responding? Do you have anything else running when this happens? Are there any changes to your system that were made before this started to happen?

How long have you had Word installed? Did you register it?

Also, did you try following the steps in the post that I mentioned in my first reply.

Re: Word program locks up (2002)

I'm a Contract Mgr. Therefore, I usually several Word docs open at the same time but I've experienced the lock-ups (doc not responding) with as few as 1 doc open and as many as 5 or 6 open at the same time. No hourglass and msg. at first - a doc will just stop responding for several minutes (approx 10-15 mins) then I get an error msg and the entire program shuts down or crashes. I can access other doc until I recv the error msg. When I'm working, I'm a network and normally I run Excel, Lotus Notes (company e-mail & db program), Vantive (business system) and possibly Explorer. I think the problem may have started after I downloaded a patch for Explorer from the Big Guy's site (not completely certain the download is the problem). I've been running Word for as long as Word has been around but just upgraded from Word 2000 in summer of last year. Yes I did register it. Yes, I did try your suggestions. Haven't experienced the problem but not really used the Word extensively since. Thanks in advance for all replies!

Re: Word program locks up (2002)

    Hi Sue:
Since you've already deleted temp files & checked for a corrupt normal.dot or conflicting add-in, I'd Ctrl+Alt+Del everything except Explorer & Stystray & then start Word. This may indicate whether there is a conflict with another application, although it the ones mentioned shouldn't cause it (although I'm not familiar with Vantive).

Also, I'd try running the Repair option on the help menu. If I think of anything else, I'll post back.
