Can't set OE6 as Default Mail handler (6.0 SP1)

When I click on "Make Default" to set OE6 as the Default Mail handler (Tools/Options/General Default Messaging Programs) it is ignored (the next time I run OE6, the option to make it the default is still presented). Is there a Registry setting that would fix this problem? Any assistance would be gratefully received.

This seems like a double post, but if <post#=213324>post 213324</post#> didn't work for you, try it again, make sure you hit 'Apply' before you hit 'OK', then exit OE and then open IE > 'Tools' > 'Internet Options' > 'Programs' & select 'Outlook Express' from the drop-down 'E-mail' box then 'Apply' > 'OK' to set Outlook Express as the default program for your email.

If that won't work for you and you are sure you are comfortable editing the registry, back up you registry and then navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsmail

In the right-hand pane at the top you will see the default name string value under 'Name' as per the screenshot below. Under the 'Data' column heading is the default mail handler. Right-click on "(Default)" in the first column and select 'Modify'. A box will pop up and then you simply enter "Outlook Express" (include the space but NOT the quote marks) under 'Value data:', hit 'OK', then exit the Registry editor.

Note: The items under the 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsmail' key are the mail applications that are installed on your system.

Re: Can't set OE6 as Default Mail handler (6.0 SP1)

Weird but true ... I checked the Registry and the default Mail client at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClientsmail is set to "Outlook Express" (although OE6 still offers to set the default, the Default button not greyed out). In addition, in IE6 Tools/Internet Options/Programs, the selection for Email is blank and the only program offered in the drop-down list is Microsoft Outlook (which is not being used).
    Any other suggestions most welcome.

Would you mind sending me screenshot of the registry entry, please? Thanks!

Re: Can't set OE6 as Default Mail handler (6.0 SP1)

Thank you Bruce. Attached is the screen-shot you requested. As you will see, Outlook Express is not listed in the Registry under Mail, only Microsoft Outlook is (which is not being used). This explains the weird behaviour I was experiencing. IE6 SP1 came installed on my new PC with Windows XP Pro. Having now seen the missing Outlook Express in the Registry, I tried to re-install IE6 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Centre, but it failed, saying my version was more recent than the SP1 I was trying to install.
    Your advice would be appreciated.

Ahhhhhh.....now this makes sense. That's why the previous steps didn't work. For some reason your system is not recognizing OE despite it being installed on your system. If this is a new unit has and your software is installed as part of an OEM bundle, then, as much of a pain in the hinder it could be to end up on hold indefinitely, I would first contact your manufacturer's tech support to see if there is a fix in the event they have customized the installation on your unit.
